Compare to harpoon
Is this as good as the old harpoon game. God i loved that game
RE: Compare to harpoon
Far, far better. The Data base is much larger and more complete, the game engine is generations better, the modeling is so much more realistic.
I started playing Harpoon in '89 and all the way through. You will not be disapointed.
There are more in depth comparisons around but I don't have links to them at them moment.

RE: Compare to harpoon
I loved Harpoon and had every version. This is sort of similar, brought up to date, and as said, the database alone is worth the cost. Things like the mission editor take it to a place that Harpoon could never approach.
So IMO it's much, much better. And the support of the developers can't be beat.

coachi,
I agree with the others. I was a die hard Harpoon fan. It was the best in the world. But, this game left it in the dust by miles. Buy the game! You will enjoy it.

RE: Compare to harpoon
This one misses the mark compared to harpoon. But it's not built by Navy "experts" either. Larry Bond forgot more than most in that regard.
There is no IFF in this one, planes can fly as low as they want and not crash, communication from officers is gone etc...
That said the database is extensive albeit inaccurate in terms of ranges of weapons and radar, but you can work around that some using sort of an X-factor.
We knew the game would be "upgraded" at some point, we just didn't know how.
I give it 6 out of 10 stars compared to Harpoon

RE: Compare to harpoon
I remember waiting outside of Waldens to buy the first box set of Harpoon the day it released. I had bought the pen-n-paper game and saw an advert in it for the 360 Pacific title. It was a great game for the time, and I spent entire Christmas vacations on my 386 in college escorting convoys across the Atlantic in the North Atlantic Convoys battle set or fighting the Syrians with Israeli PTGMs in the Med set. But that game was child's play compared to Command.

Much better. The user interface alone is nicer. There's a lot more detail to the game, and there's a lot more options for experimenting with different tactics by controlling the AI instead of making assumptions. Much of the game will feel familiar if you're used to Harpoon, but it's been greatly expanded on. For example, you can control shot doctrine for different weapons. Air refueling and logistics at sea are modeled. There's the beginnings of an amphibious and air assault capability. Mine warfare is modeled. Directed energy weapons are modeled in more detail. It's like Harpoon in many ways, but richer and evolved. The depth allows for a much more sophisticated look at air and naval tactics in the post-WWII era.

If you would like a feel for the game, just read through AndrewJ's post #40 at the link here: tm.asp?m=4580043&mpage=2
It will give you and idea of the depth of the game, and realizing that this is only the testing phase for a scenario, it will also give you an idea for the great support you get from the community here. This is a game far far better than anything Harpoon ever hoped, or was able to be.

As we all did.
For me, overlays. They can't be beat!

Do you mean this one, or one of the ones after this? I have them all.

RE: Compare to harpoon
I am going to be perfectly honest: there is an interface learning curve compared to harpoon.
Apart from that, this is a wargame whereby the only way to get anything better is to play a detailed board wargame... and who has the patience or the time to do that (maybe when I was young)?
So the only warning I have is the interface learning curve... but many of the initial commands are similar to H2 menu.

If you mean me, yeah that's the boxed set I got. Wound up with three over the years. My first Data Annex was falling apart. Played around a dozen serious tabletop scenarios with others but it was always hard to get enough people together to play a decent game.
RE: Compare to harpoon
Primarchx,
Yes, I have all of them as well.
That original started out so simple. But, I remember having a huge area set out on the floor trying to bring my ships close enough to detect one another, much less shoot at one another. Thanks goodness the computer would be released a few years later, and then the computer game, or I would still have papers all over the floor. <g>

RE: Compare to harpoon
There are few, if any, games that illustrate how far this industry can come like CMANO. I dropped a bundle on all the Harpoon stuff but struggled with it. But there was nothing else. I remember marveling at the box containing Jane's Fleet Command. And yet the game was sorely lacking even then.
And yes, playing the game (CMANO) is a step above using the living room floor. [;)]

RE: Compare to harpoon
While we are discussing things Harpoon, does anyone have the harpoon sound files for seahag. I need the "vampire, vampire vampire" and other contact notifications...
I've tried extracting and system recording them but with little success.
Also, has anyone created scenarios that match the harpoon scenarios? Is there a list anywhere?
Thanks.
Harpoon was brilliant, this game takes it to another level.

I would like them as well. The voices in Harpoon were good, and combine them with this, job's done...[:)]

RE: Compare to harpoon
Command worth every dollar it costs, and if you find him on a sale, do yourself a favor, buy at least base game and Chains of War (so you have all the features that the consumer edition can offer). Then think about other expansions too.
I can say a think for sure: The only others Sims that I have enjoyed so much were the aforementioned Harpoon (exactly the special Harpoon 1 edition) and Great Naval Battles 4 from SSI (great game, great ships: It let me think to ask in the correct thread to add to the database some great WWII ship that survived the war, like the warship "Giulio Cesare/Novorossiysk after she was sell to USSR to repay war debts).
And more than that games, command has a geopolitical simulation flavor that no other sim has.

I don't agree with your overall assessment (CMANO is much better than Harpoon IMHO), but I do agree that it could do with adding or expanding features like IFF and communications. Fratricide, or the threat thereof, has been present in all major conflicts, whereas in Command it's mostly impossible. It's probably difficult to implement though.
