What does ROF mean in the Add Weapon Record?

Post by dpabrams »

Does this have any influence on anything? When loading out a magazine you will note that many weapons are shown with different ROF. For example at Mk 46 NEARTIP Mod 2 may show ROF's from 1 to 600. I understand the rate of fire acronym but does it matter if you load your weapons with higher or lower ROF?

yes, it should.

to be more helpful:

ROF is a measure of reload time. most of the time, mounts (ie, turrets, missile launchers, TELs, torpedo tubes, etc) will have a very low ROF; they can empty themselves almost at will into the enemy until they run out and must enter a reload cycle.

the magazines (torpedo storage, ammunition storage, on-site missile reloads, ammo belts) have a high ROF, because there is some engineering procedure that must take place before the weapons will become ready again.

it's easy to envision if you look at say, an SA-6 launcher. it's SA-6 missiles on it's TELs will have a low ROF, representing their ability to fly at the push of a button- once they are empty, additional missiles must be brought out from storage, loaded onto the TELs, made ready, and then only then can they be fired. this is represented by a high ROF (and is basically their reload time)

Good point. Look at the records for most 324mm ltwt torps. The smaller ROFs are those of launching aircraft or ship-board torpedo tubes. The longer ROFs tend to be records referring to a shipboard magazine of torps for reloading in their deck tubes. When launching the ROF is a factor of how long it takes to spin up the torp and drop it in the water. When reloading a tube it's a factor of getting a torp out of a magazine, moving it to a launcher and reloading that launcher. So you see 324mm weapon records with an ROF of 5 (for firing) and ROFs of 300 or 600 (ship magazines).

I must say that this can be a bit confusing, because the terms used are counter-intuitive to common military usage. The way I remember it is:

Fast rate of fire = low ROF value in the DB = a very high speed firing of the munition = what in Military speak would be a High ROF

Slow rate of fire = high ROF value in the DB = a slower speed of firing and or reloading the mount = what in Military speak would be a low ROF
