Joe ran a SCTF up from Singapore. I've kinda been waiting for him to do that as he uses TFs to run into range of my bombers and then LRCAPS them with fighters. Anyways, his three-ship SCTF runs into a world of hurt at Kota Bharu.

Joe's hitting Moulmein with bombardments and Sweeps. My 55th Div. is already across the river and headed for Pegu…

I pulled all of my fighters from Rabaul to hit Guam. Joe did some exploratory attacks @ Rabaul so I'm pulling fighters back for CAP. I've got an AG of 12 Oscar there now and will get the BF109 AG back in place 2morrow.

I take another two bases as I work my way down Malaya plus I take back Woleai with a para-drop.

Guess what I just found… A pair of German SST… 750 supply capacity each..

I've sent a few more possible corrections in to Joe that involved aircraft. It'll be good to clear those up for future players of this mod.

The RO-63 is on what I think is a pretty sweet little patrol that brings her into Tarakan every four days. I kinda like the skipper of this sub; he's been pretty aggressive in his attacks.

My attacks at Guam continue. Joe is being a little more aggressive around Rabaul but I've the fighters in the area now. If he keeps sending in those bombers unescorted I'll rack up some kills. :-)

Same with China - plenty of air attacks on enemy LCU as my ground units pursue.

It's taken me a bit to get my units up into Burma but I've finally got things looking somewhat in order. I just moved an air group of A6M2 to start contesting for air supremacy.

Near Sibolga my 1st IT Colonial Div. shock-attacked the two enemy LCU and they disappeared… Not destroyed I don't think - I just don't know where they went. I've seen units dissolve before but normally I get something in the Combat Report.

So I tried a 2nd Naval Bombardment of Guam. My ships slice through a gaggle of PT boats and then get caught up in the mine field. A CS and DD each eat a mine. That sucked. In my zest to try and engage enemy TFs I get one of my own a little bit too close. The TF was originally a Fast Transport from Indochina to Borneo but I sent it off to attack enemy shipping as a detour from their original mission (hence my ground casualties). I'll run the TF out of trouble and get them into repair.

11 JAN 42

So near Cam Ranh Bay I had three DD that were trying to join up with my carriers 'cause Joe has too damned many sibs in the S. China Sea… My ASW_TF runs into a single allied DD that is apparently just trying to get the heck outta Dodge…

Both sides disengage. Twice. And they take their sweet time doing it… lol.

Near Soebi-besar the CA Takao a wit a DD escort runs into a pair of CL. They exchange a bit of fire but not too much happens. The Takao was already well damaged from the 10th but I'm still trying to limp it to a port. Miri is the closest but Brunie is next door. I'm thinking Joe will port attack Miri so I'm shooting for Brunie. Below is the little spat between the Takao and the Dragon\Dauntless. I don't have a warm and fuzzy about Takao making it to port as the fires increase significantly since the last combat report...

Did you mistake the CM (cruiser-minelayer) for a BC or miss putting the BC on the list? That was a lot of casualties for a DD and CM to inflict.

1 29/30 1942

Post by durnedwolf »

1.29/30.42
So my troops are at the door of Singapore, gathering at Johore Bharu. Joe did a night bombardment on the 28th, which kind of surprised me. :-) Orders for the 29th included night-time naval attacks with night-time naval search covering my base. One of my BG actually attacked his bombardment TF. The BG of Lily didn't hit anything but it was still cool to see.

Later in the turn Joe ran an air attack at my ground units @ Johore Bharu. They were heavily escorted. Most of my FG were high in fatigue so I had most of the FG stood down with the remainder on CAP over my base. But maybe next turn… :-P

He flew in a few fortress tho, and they attacked the AF. I haven't seen those near Singapore in a while and was hoping he had them down south of Borneo where I'm making a push. I was hoping not to let the airfield take too much damage.

Well, at least I have a better idea of his assets in this region.

I sent a couple of bombardment TFs myself and they struck at Padang and Hollandia. I know - impressive targets - what? It's good to see FP from the BCs flying recon for the bombardments. Damage to the enemy in both cases was lite but it's still fun to pull off a good hit-and-run.

In China I ran into a fighter CAP over Liuchow. I got lucky as he didn't have but a few fighters on CAP. Enemy ground units took a few casualties but nothing to write home about. At Liuchow I see the:

200th Chinese/A Div.
6th Chinese Corps
63rd Chinese Corps

Sub actions went off around the board but there was no real action.

I bombed Tsiaotso - trying to soften it up for the deliberate attack planned. I spot a pair of Chinese Corps. There's more than that there but that's all I was able to ID from the air attack. Of course I got the full scoop from the attack.

Image

Ground combat at Tsiaotso (88,42)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 87052 troops, 670 guns, 86 vehicles, Assault Value = 2674

Defending force 48564 troops, 237 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1263

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 2

Japanese adjusted assault: 1406

Allied adjusted defense: 4375

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 3 (fort level 2)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
3015 casualties reported
Squads: 11 destroyed, 498 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 23 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 22 disabled
Guns lost 21 (1 destroyed, 20 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
777 casualties reported
Squads: 22 destroyed, 152 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 19 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 7 disabled

Assaulting units:
3rd Ind.Mixed Brigade
27th Division
19th Division
16th Ind.Mixed Brigade
63rd Division
110th Division
1st Matrosen Division

Defending units:
27th Chinese Corps
98th Chinese Corps
5th New Chinese Corps
93rd Chinese Corps
13th Chinese Corps
2nd Chinese Cavalry Corps
7th Group Army
17th Group Army

Orders:
Col Notomi J., Commander 46th Div., formally attached to the Western Army but recently attached to the Southern Army.

Dear father,

You will not believe my luck! My division has been assigned to the Philippine campaign. Already I have my unit marching for Nagasaki, where ships await to transport us to the fields of battle. Finally I will have my opportunity to test my mettle against the round-eyes. It has been hard being stationed here at Kumamoto while hearing of our great successes in Malaya, Sumatra, China, and the Philippines. Keep a candle lit in the dojo for me - I go to seek honor and glory for our family name!

Regarding Production:
I'm doing well with the Zeros now, normally producing 8-9 fighters per turn. All of the German AC use the Ha-34 engine so therein lies my bottleneck. I've assigned four factories to their production but it's still going slowly. I'm really trying to get those BF109 T2 and ME 110C-4 ramped up to replace most of my Army fighters. At least the German fighters have armor and centre-lined cannon… Almost anything is better than a pair of 12.7mm MG - lol.

In China:
@ Tsiaotso I'll wait a pair of turns to get in repairs and then hit it again. So dot hexes have stats for airfields and forts… My WAG is that the AF is probably 0/1-2 but I think I can still do damage to a 0-level AF to prevent forts from being increased - yes?

@ Chengchow I'm pushing 5 divisions up that way.

In Malaya
I've got my fighters back on-line. More bombers are assigned to N_Naval_Atk At Johore Bharu. Plus I've got AA headed to Johore Bharu. I've got a tad over 200 fighters while mighty-mouse shows 164 fighters at Singapore. Most of my Army fighters are nothing to brag about… Oscar and Nate. I've got a FG of BF109 but they need another turn to drop their fatigue. I've got 7 divisions at Johore Bharu, two of which are tanks. Mighty-mouse shows 25 enemy units @ Singapore but most are probably the dink-units that ran south from my glorious imperial troops. He's probably got 2500 AV? It's hard to tell with this mod. I'm gunna have to peak at a T1 for the allies and get a feel for what might-could be in Singapore.

1/2 FEB 42
Movie & Report Highlights
- I-172 puts five torpedoes into the TK Sunchaser. Down goes the sun. :-)
- Joe Sweeps Johore Bahru with Whirlwinds and then P40E Warhawks.
- Guam & Clark Air Bombardments.
- Naval Bombardment @ Johore Bharu
- So last turn I stopped trying to attack a 0 level airfield and went after the enemy LCU. That worked better. :-)
- I'm hitting the AF @ Liuchow, China, and getting decent hits with light losses. I though Joe was flying from that AF but I haven't seen any aircraft losses on the ground in my reports.
- Johore Bharu forts go to 1 this turn. As forts increase I think it decreases damage done by enemy air raids. Maybe Naval bombardments too. Yes?
- My second attack at Tsiaotso drops the enemy fort level to 1. I'll wait 2-3 turns and repeat.

Turn Highlights in Malaya
○ Bumped some of my FG in Malaya to High CAP
○ Added 2 FG to the air battle.
○ Bombers set for Night Operations\Naval Attack

Thoughts/Plans
- In China I'm still pushing along the top line towards Sian and from the bottom for Liuchow.
- In Malaya I'm still gathering ground units for an assault of Singapore and I'm increasing assets towards control of the air.
- I added another CS for resources from Sapporo to Shimonoseki.
- I'm sending the 10th Special Base Force from Yokohama to Hakodate.
- So I was looking at the Me 262A that comes available in January of 45. It uses a pair of NE turbojet engines. They come on line in January of 46… And it upgrades to the ki-9 Spruce. I'm still bumping up production of both in hopes of getting them in mid 1944.
- Northeast NE Guinea I'm going after Nadzab, a dot hex. I've got a fast transport bringing supplies and troops to my footprint in the Solomon Sea region.
- I'm moving a FP AG from Japan to Malaya but it'll take a few turns. Chichijima Ku T-1. Currently at Kanoya.

Movie & Report Highlights
- So Joe did a Naval bombardment again at Johore Bharu. And my air groups flew a counter-strike. I didn't hit anything - that's an experience thing on the part of my bomber groups but what I think is cool is that they are flying. At night. To attack an enemy bombardment TF.

Thoughts/Plans
Regarding bomber production:
- I'm not making the G3M4 Nell and instead am pushing out the G4M1. I'm gradually getting the opportunity to start updating/upgrading bomber groups.
- At Mersing I have a ground unit and the base should permanently swap over to Japan.
- Most of my PB building program has finished converting new ASW assets.
- I added more ASW TF for the Marianas Islands.
- I'm sending another DB AG to the Marianas Islands - 1 DB Group now at Chichi-jima.
- LCU Bombardment is planned at Padang
- I'm moving 4 divisions against Chengchow. 0/46m.

- I've noticed that my escorts do not engage enemy CAP at night over by Johore Bharu. The CAP always seems to go straight to my bombers. My WAG is that Joe has his bombardment TF Capped. My bombers are being escorted by the fighters. Maybe I need to Night-CAP Johore Bharu and hope a CAP over my base will take out his CAP over his bombardment TF?

Fighters do not dogfight at night. It is one thing for a defending NF to be vectored on to a bomber and close up slowly using the bomber engine exhaust sparks as a point of reference. It is quite another for fighters to see and attack one another in the dark.

Where am I at game-wise?
- I'm marching on Singapore in Malaya.
- I'm marching on Pegu in Burma
- I'm working on Padang in Sumatra. The Air transport phase in in place to transport units to Sumatra as soon as Padang falls.
- I'm driving Operation Uppercut and Operation Right Cross in China.
I've got my padding at Attu to start pushing in the Aleutian Isles.

Thanks for the feedback regarding escort fighters at night. It makes sense when I think it through with your insight. I guess I just assumed that escort fighters flew a little above the bombers and if they saw enemy fighters closing in on my bombers from behind, that the Japanese fighter escorts might-could get a dive-run on the attacking allied fighters.

Joe got a good attack on one of my TFs near the PI. I still have a habit of thinking those are "safe" back waters. In truth, lazy play on my part.

I see a small carrier group near Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians. Since I don't have my AF @ Attu up to at least 1 so I can provide a CAP, I'm backing my TFs away from Attu. No sense in loosing a couple of oilers and my protecting SCTF has no air support...

A look at Road Warrior, that will go off in another turn.

Operation Road Warrior (Capture Padang, Sumatra)
Japanese Assets:
- 67th ACEH Inf Div.
- 1st IT Colonial Div.
- 7th ACEH Inf Div.
- 1st IT Indp Tank Bn.
Allied Troops:
- 3rd KNIL Rgt.
- Tapanoeli Cdo.
- Emmahaven Defenses
- Padang KM Base Force.

10.2.42
- Supplies for my ground forces are in the red. I've assigned two Transport Groups to fly supplies to Padang and another that is flying supplies in to Sibolga to the north. I knocked the forts down to 1 on 7 FEB 42. I'm going in on the 11th regardless of supplies - I just like to have an operation go off with all my boxes checked if I can. If I wait much longer his defenses will increase…

Sumatra
- My troops are successful in taking Padang but it's bloody - primarily due (I think) to my troops attacking while poor in supplies. Two enemy LCU surrender and two are able to retreat to Sawahoento - a nearby dot hex.
- Bombers out of Medan attack the two units @ Sawahoento.

Malaya
- Singapore Assault - 22/46m.
- More fighters arrive @ Kuala Lumpur. Everyone is gearing up for the big push.
- I created mini-subs and barges at Johore Bharu. This should be interesting - I'm throwing a TF of each at Singapore. Maybe they'll clear out some mines? A naval Banzai. With barges. Imagine the allies surprise.
- So the barges went down with one hit each. Three mini-subs hit mines. They apparently make great mine-removers. I'm wondering what happens if I leave the mini-subs local to Johore-Bharu? One mini-sub puts a torpedo into the xAP Hong Kong… But then it too hits a mine.
