Uncommon Valor

Post by Monkey »

Remember this [:)] Well I was playing the AE Guadalcanal scenario and remembered really enjoying UV, So feeling nostalgic, I took a look in the bookcase and there it was. Hooray, I reinstalled UV but just can’t get it running, very frustrating, I’ve tried running as administrator (it’s my pc too) and in every combo of compatibility modes possible, but the game steadfastly refuses to run. I’m stuck as to what to try next so any help would be really appreciated
Anyway I posted over on the UV forum but since it’s almost silent there I would try here

My first guess woulde be: Your system is too new. Some older games do not like newer operating systems. Try find an outdated PC from the UV release time, or setup a virtual PC and install an older OS on it.

I agree with the Richard.
I too owned UV and it is the grandfather of WITP and shares the same game engine.

I suggest you might need to use the same switches some of us have had to use for WITP AE, especially if you are using Win10 ??
If you are not familiar with the switches, go to the WITP tech area and find the several threads on the subject.
Our forum has a lot of very helpful folks who have been very kind in helping me over the years.

Not exactly (even the Mcenzi) UV is just and best FIGHTS ships on ships; the engine-motor of UV is unique not on WITP or WITPAE.

DOSBox 0.74 is solution you need. It is free emulator of old PC with Ms-Dos.
I can run even play Steel Panthers I, II & III with it.

I absolutely loved UV. It was my introduction to this game engine and I was quite active on the forum way back when.

However much I loved it I would have as hard time going to it as I would with the original WITP.

Think about it.....no waypoints, no patrol zones, air fragments have to be micro managed and on and on.

I went back once to one of my all time favorite naval games\, Great Naval Battles 1942, Guadalcanal and found myself resoundingly disappointed that I had to use scroll bars to move the map.

Sometimes our nostalgia for an old game meets the harsh reality of how clunky interfaces were in the era of said game and it ends up destroying the luster of the nostalgia.

I had always hoped someone would come up with a UV scenario for AE.

I never played UV. What's it got that the stock Guad scenario doesn't?

Warning Gentlemen,

The individual who has started to post in this thread under the name of "Veloz" is the same individual who a couple of months ago was trolling us under the name "AFBTD".  I don't know if his sudden cessation of posting under "AFBTD" was due to his account being suspended by Matrix but I do know it is against the forum rules to have multiple accounts.

It's been a long time since I've played but as I remember the scope was much larger.
I think it began before Coral Sea and lasted until the allies were receiving corsairs.
I think the map included Brisbane, Noumea and Rabual. Mainly the South Pacific theater.
I don't believe I played it even once after the WitP release.

Have this on my old laptop which is running XP. It was never stable, program kept locking up. Was attempting to run Panzer General on it. So was it me or the program, or not enough info. Couldn't really give you too much more as it was ages ago, and I essentially gave up on the idea. Doesn't mean I wouldn't try again, if I could come up with the right program(s) to run.

There are a few games that require a change in certain settings of the Dosbox config. One example being star trek: a final unity. The game would crash on tactical when using the wrong CPU architecture (or whatever it was)
There are DosBox forums around with setup data for almost any game requiring special care.

Thanks, I'll have to remember that, and use it if I ever find time. Now what the heck did I have in my old laptop (2002 model)?[:D]
