Which strategy games should I buy ?

Which strategy games should I buy ?
I am planning to buy a few new titles from Matrix/Slitherine but don´t know which to choose.
I am thinking of:
- Desert war 1940-1942
- Piercing Fortress Europe
- Operational art of War IV
- Field of Glory 2
- Thirty Years war
The only safe buy will be TOAOW 4 but what about the others ?
The game must have a good A.I and be reasonable easy to get into (ie not War in the West).

How about Advanced Tactics Gold?
Favoritism is alive and well here.

Field of Glory 2 is for me the top runner out of the list, and after that it all depends on which battle area you like the most

Field of Glory II without question. Thirty Years War and PFE maybe at a 50% discount.

Thanks for the advice, but why is PFE not up to the task ?

IMHO PFE is great along with any of Frank Hunters titles, like with "Campaigns on the Danube". His titles are always on my HDD, specially because I like the WEGO system and how it`s implemented.
All the titles you mentioned are good though...

Of the others which aren't "safe"
1 - Field of Glory 2
2 - Piercing Fortress Europa
3 - Desert War 1940 - 1942

Another vote here for FOG2, Piercing Fortress Europa and Desert War. All excellent games.

Decisive Campaigns Case Blue.
Good AI - not a life investment like the Gary Grigsby games ....
Others would coach you to get the Barbarossa game instead (which is good for other reasons)
But there is a special tingly joy to directly bombing and shelling Bolsheviks before capturing hordes of them in a huge

AGEOD's Birth of America 2 (AKA Wars in America): from the Franco-Indian wars to the American Revolution. A deceptively simple game crafted with great care and depth - from the WEGO engine to the "old look" feeling of the graphics.

If you open up the whole catalog, it's another story. I would certainly consider Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa and others. I enjoyed Frank Hunter's WWI game, but PFE with no editor/modding and no patch in four years - not for $40 - wait for the sale.
IMHO, Advanced Tactics Gold is an amazing game still, but not if you don't use the editor. And if money is any object at all, you're kind of looking at a bad time, as a lot of these games get high discounts these days, but not at the moment.

RE: Which strategy games should I buy ?
Thanks for all advice. I have this anniversary coupon discount which gives me 40% discount on a single purchase and it has to be used soon or expire so I can´t wait for any sale.
I already own Decisive Campaigns Warzaw to Paris and Case Blue and will wait for a Steam discount to get Barbarossa. The same goes for Field of Glory 2 (not too interested in purely tactical combat without campaigns) and Advanced Tactics Gold (too similar to decisive campaign but nice features with production and resources).
It is too bad PFE seems discontinued and the forum is dead because I like the theater and campaign mode. Especially defensive war. But with 40% discount it might be ok ?
Desert War 1940-1942 might be good but lacks a campaign and seems to be quite overwhelming with counters and stacks. I haven´t decided yet.
Thirty Years war will be on sale on Steam from time to time as well so I think I will skip it. I still have Alea Acta Est and Succession Wars which I havent even begun playing yet.

The only game I am familiar with is the TOAW series. Game is expansive in that you create your own games, and game with developed scenarios. And there is a large community of players and scenario developers.

Same with Advanced Tactics Gold. Lots of player made scenarios, a great editor and a great random game generator.ORIGINAL: TheeWarLord

TOAW and FoG2 are easily recommended.
PFE I think is an acquired taste.
You will find reviews on most of those games at AWNT. See signature link. THey may help you decide.

RE: Which strategy games should I buy ?
Yes, that is a quandary. For the heck of it, I would check out Command: Modern Air / Naval Operations and Campaign Series Middle East. I don't think the first will be discounted or a while, and definitely not the latter. For me, they are amazing, but quite tactical. Scourge of War - Gettysburg is an acquired taste. And Warhammer 40,000: Gladius is getting good reviews, and just released, you would get quite a bargain. Have fun!

RE: Which strategy games should I buy ?
I've got a 47% discount coupon and have the same problem. I like the idea of PFE since playing Avalon Hill's Anzio in the olden days. I also like the idea of Desert War 1940-1942 since playing AH's Tobruk and SPI's Panzer Armee Afrika and Campaign for North Africa way back when. Campaign Series Middle East also intrigues me. What to do? The missus might get a bit miffed if I picked up all of them.

Again I'd prob go for Desert War or Campaign game. Think I'd swing more to DW. However don't forget TOAW has scenarios covering everything you like...
