how to avoid all the whermacht to fire against your trasport planes

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

how to avoid all the whermacht to fire against your trasport planes

Post by MrBlizzard »

Hi all
I flew an air supply mission and a really huge number of enemy units fired against my transport planes downing 14 and damaging 98 !!! [X(]

I'm rather surprised about that because the mission was flown inside my lines
and it seems that everthing, even 158 stugIII, even 18 mtorcycle squads [&:], fired against my poor planes

How could I have avoided this slaughter?
thanks

... and in the same turn Axis has flown 3 air suppy missions in the same sector
and not even a single allied man fired a single shot against them!!
germans lost just 1 plane for operations causes

It seems more correct this situatuation, how can enemy fire fron another hex with short range weapons?
And of course many enemy devices are not present in adiacent hexes , i.e. 158 stugs, don't know where they come from, maybe from HQ [&:]

thanks

They shouldn't unless you pass the hex ... or this is some kind of display glitch.

Transport sorties are handled a bit differently in the code comparing to all other air ops. Is there a way to get a save before this battle?

Turn 79 is now on server
battleground italy 43-45 mrblizzard against sbit
you can try another air supply mission with all planes to the same hex 125,238 (carrara AF), I think it should cause a similar effect

I think flak in adjacent hexes to the path can fire, if the aircraft is flying over a certain altitude. However, it's possible since those routines are not like other air missions as Pavel said, it's possible the formula is different. But I'd expect the possibility of flak if you fly over or adjacent to enemy units. Did the Germans fly to a hex adjacent to Allied units? The Allied transports are flying next to 3 stacks of enemy units, so that may be causing the flak. Some of these losses could be op losses, especially if you fly at night. 337 is a lot of transports.
All understanding comes after the fact.

I would advise against flying directly units. If you feel the railroad network is lagging behind, fly supply to depots.

I don't know what altitude air trasnports fly at, I think it's fixed and unpossible to change.
My air-trasports were in 2 different locations and I made a mission with all of them; I attach a picture of bases.
is it possible to set a staging base for transports? I didn't understand how to do from the manual but maybe could solve my problem.
The Germans flown 3 different air supply missions, all of them to an hex adiecent to my units, and in any case no units fired at them.
I checked and all 14 allied losses were from flak (no operational).

I've looked at the code and it looks like it has some issues tracing flak fire for the transport sorties.

Yeah, it looks like the mission, maybe staging on rimini AF, flew over the whole gothic line, also above those 2 panzergrenadier divisions full of StugIII

My opponent just told me that he made last turn with last official release for a mistake. I played instead with last beta.
I don't know if this syncro issue caused the problem.

He said also that many support units belonging to HQs far away (5 hexes) from the hex resupplied fired against my transport planes. 3 stug brigades for instance, they're the only units that have Stuh42 in TOE.

Yes, I found that transport path from temp port air base gets unexpected deviation which makes it "flying" well behind enemy lines. Fixing it now.

It is not unique to temp air bases, but in your case path from the Adriatic goes "along" the enemy line and this triggers bad path deviation.

The support for this game is amazing.

Thanks to users like MrBlizzard for raising these issues and particular thanks to the badly named Helpless (who should perhaps be named Helpful. [:)]) for his continued dedication to making this game even better than it already is.

Mr. Blizzard,

It IS possible to set staging base - actually staging depot - for air supply missions. The keystrokes and mouse-click sequence is tricky, and has to be followed exactly:

1. Press F9 twice so that it says "Freight" above the menu ribbon
2. Left mouse click on the depot you want to fly from. A good choice for your example would have been Livorno.
3. Shift-right mouse click on the target hex.
4. Select the air units you want to use.
5. Click the Launch link.

Blizzard,

If you can go back to your save game and try flying the air supply mission from Livorno, I would be interested in the results. The question is whether your air losses are due to flying over the German line, or flying one hex from all those German units.

Clicking Livorno won't do anything as there is no air base. You can select air base (staging base), but it does nothing just increase air group mileage. Actual flight happen strait from from the air base to the target hex.
