Don't peek AW1Steve

Post by geofflambert »

I just want to make sure I'm not hallucinating. In stock, gorn vs. human PBEM, the allied player is still not allowed to accelerate any shipbuilding, right? It's 11/3/42 and I'm seeing what appears to be three CVs with escorts entering SF Bay. If acceleration is now allowed, I would think they might be the three CVEs due in six weeks in Balboa. If acceleration is not allowed to the Allied player, then this would be three CVs presumably heading there to upgrade their AA. Which means I have a month or more of superiority in the Western Pacific to play with and he likely would not try anything risky. Neither of us has lost any carriers to date (or just hook up for a night).

For the curious here's the last score board I took.

No, the Allies cannon accelerate construction. However, the appearances of ships can change based on the initial PBEM settings (i.e. doing the +/- reinforcements option).

Yes, but as the Japanese player I alone had access to the editor, and changed nothing. So that means either my floatplane pilot (sub based) is crazy or those were actual CVs.

I'd also suggest that the reports could be exaggerated... There's been many a time I've seen allied CA's identified as CVs and vice-versa... Japan's intel so sucks...

Also quite common for tankers to be ID'd as CVs - long ship, clear deck. It happened in the case of Neosho at Coral Sea so I think the game plays it up.

The report included enough aircraft to fill up three CVEs and in my experience (float plane sightings aren't the kind of intel that blows for the Japanese) that doesn't happen when they really aren't carriers.

I should say that search plane sightings often do blow, for both sides, but when a sighting actually makes it onto the map it's at least in the same ballpark as reality.

The USN does get some CVE reinforcements before November '42. I would imagine you might have some margin of superiority for a little while longer if they are indeed CVs going to upgrade. Nonetheless, its a slim thing to bet your hopes on. Given that the USN should have 6 CVs by now, it would be prudent to act carefully no matter what you do.

You're reading too much into a furtive sighting by a single Glen pilot. It could be CVEs, AOs, CAs, BBs or a pod of dolphins. I wouldn't put any credence on the quantity of planes identified either, as it could easily be half the reality or double the reality.
