Using Buddy Illumination

Post by fatgreta1066 »

For loadouts requiring this, do I simply include the buddy illumination outfitted airplanes in the mission? Part of the strike? Escorts? Or are they better sent as a separate mission?

Is there any way to know how many illumination planes are needed per strike aircraft, or vice versa?

buddy lasing is automatic from platforms that are capable of lasing, you need one laser per target, though multiple lases per platform are possible if your designators are capable of it.

you need one laser per weapon assuming you are not using multiple weapons against the same target. only one designation is required per target AFAIK- so a dozen GBU/24 against a runway only needs one laser spot.

Thanks for that. Do I have to assign a specific buddy store to a target, or are they automatically allocated if present?

lasing happens automatically assuming:

buddy laser has LOS to target

buddy laser is in range to target

someone needs buddy lasing on target(s)

that buddy laser has not already allocated all of his laser designators to other lase requests

you can try it by just dropping say, a buddy-lase only harrier and a fire scout into the game. the fire scout will light up it's designator automatically to help the nearby harrier whenever the harrier needs it.

note: buddy store means aerial refueling (AAR) it has nothing to do with buddy lasing.

Also depends on weather and visibility. You can't always drop LGMs, so that also might be the reason, you can't release your weapons on the selected target.

Excellent, thanks for the feedback, I think I know how to do it now. Time will tell.
