Commonwealth Collision, 2018 - Pakistan-China side

Post by giantsquid »

This is probably my favorite scenario of the LIVE series, together with Spratly Spat and Pole Position. I appreciated the original story, setup, weapons choices and right size for me (not too big). Congratulations to the authors!

I tried the scenario first playing the UK-India side using F-35s and Astute Tomahawk to conduct strikes and Mig-29s to obtain air superiority and stop recon attempts by enemy planes. Nice scenario with different way to achieve the objectives. I obtained a triumph at the first try.
Playing on the Pak-China side is more challenging, and I really loved this one too.

Here is a brief AAR

I made no attempt to achieve air superiority, just left 2 F16 on CAP to protect the port, guided by AEW. The proved useful to disrupt a Mig-29 strike.
I tried to close with my ships and submarines, going south. All my frigates were sunk by Brahamos and Mig-29 airstrike, together with 2 submarines moving at creep.

Using the high altitude Chinese drones to get some general fix of the enemy task forces, I closed with maritime patrol planes and attacked with 6 JF17, armed with fast CM-400 AKG Wrecker missiles, with tankers and F16 support, together with 8 Mirage 5 with Exocets. I combined them with 8 Klub missiles from a Chinese Type 93B submarine. Most escorts were sunk and Vikramaditya carrier damaged. I sunk it with a second Exocet strike.

In the meantime, F-35s from Queen Elizabeth attacked my facilities destroying them with JDAM. I manage to take a pair of them with my F-16s, losing them anyway. Another Chinese SSN is discovered and lost to enemy helicopters.

Nine hours later I attacked the second Indian task force with escorted JF17s with Wrecker missiles (always with tanker) and Mirage with Exocets. Like before, most escorts were sunk and Viraat carrier damaged. F-35s interfered, killing my F16s escorts and recon planes, but the strike fighter escaped.

I have been quite lucky having my 2 surviving submarines, 1 pakistani Agosta and 1 chinese Type 93 close to the UK task force moving at high speed. I tried to shot down helicopters with my F-16s but I’m killed by F-35s. At last I managed to reach a decent position and to kill all enemy ship but one Type 23 escort with a huge swarm of torpedoes. Both my sub are sunk but the Queen Elizabeth UK carrier is lost!

One last JF-17 attack with C802 missile (no more Wrecker) kills the surviving escort; same with
Mirage - Exocet on crippled Viraat.

Lost pretty much everything except for my precious strike planes but I got a Triumph anyway for killing the three carriers!

Some comments
In real life/against a human player after the first massive strike on indian carrier, the F35s would probably have attacked my strike plane base together with Tomahawk, crippling them. I could not defend with a bunch of F16s.
JF-17 is a nice small plane but cannot defend himself and is short legged. Mirage 5 was a solid medium range striker.
CM400 missile is fast and quite deadly, but the ballistic profile make it vulnerable to long range SAMs. A good number were shot down by modern Indian SAMs. Klub missile used on chines type-93b sub are excellent, but vulnerable in the first phase, before they release the high speed penetrator.
I didn’t try to attack the british with missiles. The F-35s and Type-45 Daring DDG would have killed them easily. My plan was to damage the carrier and kill the Daring with submarines and later finish them with missiles, but I have been lucky.
F-16 proved superior to Mig-29 in BVR fights, thanks to better Amraam performances, but it’s better to run away from F-35s

Thanks! Did you design it? I have Black Gold LIVE too. I loved the idea but it's too big for me so I just did some planning as Iran by now.

Thanks, it's a great work.

I love the approach: using a high/low mix of forces to achieve your objective, learning to use some offensive game-changing weapons, like the F35 and Wrecker/Klub missiles. I like the size too. Some of the scenario are too big for me. I like to micro-manage and understand what's going exactly and experiment with different real world tactics.
