Hi all,
Most usually the sequals are far far worse than the originals... and the original "Das Boot" (especially the German series = 6 hours long) was as good as it could be... [8D]

They can use the Wilhelm Bauer in this series, and round it up in 1945 with an escape to South America. Maybe with
some shady persons onboard....[8|]

I always felt that the people who cling to the theory that Hitler escaped to South America to be closeted wishful
thinking.
Just a little bit creepy [:D]
RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"?
I doubt its quality will be even close to the original but I also doubt it will turn into dumbshit like U-571

U571 had 2-3 ok ship - sub battle scenes IIRC
BTW: I think the film / series of Das Boot was in fact better then the book. Except the book had more details on sub to ship and ship to sub combat. As the "reporter" character in the book is displayed as one who also served on an asw ship in the baltics before assigned to the boat..

RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"?
OT but speaking of German productions.... I just finished watching the German mini-series "Babylon Berlin". It is set in 1929 Weimar; for those of us interested in the tumultuous politics of that time it is very well done. It has a very dark Germanic side to it. A lot of money was spent on costumes set etc. The "failing" NY Times highly rated the production. Another darkish German movie set in late 1945 that I watched recently was worthwhile: This Land of Mine

Gonna be hard to top the original.

RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"?
The Buchheim book was supposed to be better/more detailed than the movie as it was too much material to fit into limited length of a movie.
The 3-part TV series is actually far superior to the movie as it provides lots of details/background/ambiente.
Will be hard to top with anything new.

Gosh I was a child...but still that movie made such a great impression, and the accompanying music is unforgettable.

Who'd like to see it again with me (in original German is completely a different experience) ?

The original was a 5 hour mini-series. You can get a 209 minute version on Amazon.
RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"?
BBC was not involved with the minisieries other than to broadcast it first.
I still shudder when the intro/title music starts playing
