It depends on what public you aim for.

In general and with regards to wargames, I tend to look for three things in PC versions...

-Random respawns.
-Real life OOB.
-Real life SOP for the era simulated.

Other things that I would add/like...

If no random respawns, then a mission editor. Some sort of LOS tool, as well as a elevation tool. A weather engine, a level of FOW, a data card for each unit with comparison capability. Just to name a few.

While at it, it´s about time we get some real nice looking maps and counters, along with a slik UI to go with it! Maps could be Google Earth type with contour lines for example. Just some ideas.

There is no definitive answer. However you can create "Fool's Gold" by mixing Silver Tongue with Elitism.

Of course if you make the slightest mistake the game will blow up in your face [:D]

The visual, the period, the gameplay, the price, the probable life of the game (publisher, multiplayer, random skirmishes) ... determines our purchase or not.
But some games have all that and are not best sellers.
So can we explain it "scientifically" or is it magic (alchemy)?

2. Get enough of media outlets to accuse the game with random BS
3. ?

in all seriousness though, I think publishing the right things on the right places should get your game the attention it needs.
