Long time no see. Was too depressed by the repeated Chungking disasters to care about updating the AAR. Game has reached Oct 25th. In the 7 game weeks since the last update I have made another try at Chungking în early October after rebuilding the shattered Eng units and swapping depleted divisions for fresh ones. This time I have attacked without overstacking, but got the same lopsided results - 16k casualties vs 4k and 250+ squads destroyed vs. 30+. Forts got reduced to 4, some small consolation. However, I have not come that far to give up. I’m rebuilding again, and I have ordered several divisions from the “Second Front” at Changsha to move to Chungking. I’ll take that §$%§& city or will die trying.
How much damage and casualties do your artillery bombardments cause on Chungking, on average?

Burma:

In Northern Burma, I have evacuated Katha, Warazup and Myitkyina to concentrate at Bhamo, and I have been pushed out of Lashio. Four expandable - er, expendable Thai divisions and two IJA brigades are trying to keep the Burma Road closed for as long as possible. Supplies are being airlifted to Bhamo from Hanoi, so far without LRCAP intervention. Fingers crossed.

Central Burma has been evacuated step by step after the defenders of Akyab and Ramree Island managed to avoid being cut off - only one brigade of the 4th Divison had to be sacrificed in the hills between Akyab and Magwe. I have also decided to evacuate Rangoon. First of all, the port being useless for me since the Allies on Port Blair control the approaches and it has become difficult to supply my forces by sea. And second, Rangoon is a deathtrap because Pegu is open terrain and the Allied 4Es would make mincemeat of any force trying to hold it. The evacuation does hand the Allies a number of level-7 airbases and a good port to supply their ground and air forces. However, I might be able to extract a price from the expected convoys from the air base complex I'm preparing at Pisanuloke and Bangkok - provided I can scrape together a viable airforce. On the ground, I try to establish a defensive line in the jungles along the Sittang river, but I'm still concerned about landings at Tavoy or Mergui unhinging the door of my house of cards.

That's the attitude I like!
Four expandable Thai divisions ...

You may wish you could expand them, but they're probably expendable. [:'(]

Good luck with further attacks at Chungking. The action in Burma is interesting. It seems that that area can be a deathtrap to either side, in either direction; whoever is trying to retreat is in severe danger of being cut off or overtaken.

SRA:
I may sent the healthier CVs to Kendari / Ambon. Heavy allied bombing attacks on airbases at Koepang and Dili and ground attacks on various islands in the Timor Sea indicate that something is afoot down there. Probably a stab against Selaroe, Saumlaki or Babar, my bases closest to Darwin. Naval search and recon reports much naval activities there and at Bathurst, including landing crafts. Smells fishy.

As predicted, Ed has launched an attack in this sector. Babar Is. has been taken with much effort from the lightly armed garrison, the 4th Raiding Regiment (Paras) in the final days of September. Enemy paras also took the dot bases of Damar and Molu. Alas, I don't have enough ground forces to defend the dozens of islands down there "adequately".

However, I cannot allow Ed to obtain a foothold down there, too many bases with good airbase potential in the area for the taking. So Babar must be taken back or at least be neutralized, until an even bigger threat appears. I do have one division guarding more important bases further back - Ambon, Boela and Kaimana - which can be thrown into a counter-attack, and a trickle of ground reinforcements will start to arrive soon. Combined Fleet has been sent first to Koepang, and after night-bombing of the port claimed some victims among the Fleet train of AKEs, ARs etc., it is now based at Ambon. Amhib shipping, supplies, air units and base forces have been ordered into the area. Babar is just within fighter range of my bases at Dili, Ambon, Boela and Kaimana, and bombers can base at Koepang and Kendari. Combined Fleet has launched some raids against Babar and a feint against Darwin / Bathurst to buy time for the build-up.

These preliminaries have been costly, the area is thick with enemy submarines and mines, so far I have two CVEs damaged by subs and a CL, five DDs and a sub sunk by mines, subs - and paratroopers. Yes, when Ed's Para Commandos took Damar Is., DD Akatsuki which had been mined and heavily damaged at Babar and was seeking shelter at Damar for emergency repairs, was scuttled.

Last turn I have finally launched the counter-landing, and of course I have botched it. First, the three minesweepers in the invasion force got hit by subs, PTs and then coastal arty, leaving the rest of the invasion fore to discover mines the hard way. Second, something went wrong with the fighter cover. KB is two hexes away and I was counting on "leaking" CAP to augment the three CVEs I had sent to Babar with follow orders for the invasion force. During turn resolution the Allied counter-attacked with one Dauntless squadron and one B-25 squadron on low-level attack. The first attacks had a few Zeros intercepting, then the skies on the first day and the second day were clear. After the turn I found the CVE force sitting at Ambon - apparently they followed the invasion force into Babar but then decided Ambon was a better place to be. Long story short, the SBDs and B-25s ravaged the invasion force, despite having BBs, CAs and numerous DDs (among them eight Akizuki anti-aircraft DDs). I have managed to get about half of the 2nd Division ashore - great.

PNG:

Apparently fed-up with the slow slogging through the jungles around Buna, Salamaua and Wau, Ed has launched an "end-around" and captured lightly defended Hansa Bay. I was expecting this, but since I have made the decision not to invest any sizeable naval and air forces in this area, Ed enjoys absolute air superiority and can go wherever he wants, while I cannot redeploy anything anymore. There is one division at Rabaul, a division-sized assortment of Naval infantry at Kavieng and on Manus, and three divisions in the Salamaua/Lae/Wau/Nazdab area, which are now cut-off. The string of bases on the PNG North coast have token garrisons, the next "hard point" is Hollandia with four Naval Guard units. It is also a staging point for a lot of construction units and base forces which I try to evacuate by air and sea. However, Allied DDs are ranging up and down the coast and most of the small xAKLs sent down there are being sunk. Behind Hollandia, there is almost nothing up to the China coast, except some base forces as stepping stones for aircraft transfers and to build forts - in the hope of having enough time to rush infantry still in the reinforcement pipeline into place...

What else:

Central Pac: Kusaie lost after token resistance despite level-5 forts, Next victim seems to be Ponape which is being bombed and bombarded. Only a speed-bump of four naval guard units with 230 AV in place behind level-5 forts. Jaluit and Majuro still fly the rising sun banner, but serve as training grounds for enemy bombers. Only the "inherent" base forces left in place, the rest has been airlifted to Truk. 350 AV at Truk behinf level 6 forts. On the Marianas, frantic digging and lots of AA in place, but only a brigade of infantry each on Saipan and on Tinian. The missing two/thirds plus the full division for Guam still at Port Arthur awaiting PPs to purchase. There must be a PP hole somewhere...

North Pac: Calm, although a small enemy SAG has been observed on a short raiding incursion. Defensive preparations continue, with a division each on Paramushiro and Onnekotan-jima and smaller forces on the other islands. Waiting for PPs to move more units from Home Islands to the islands - once the Marianans have been garrisoned.

Production:
I have way more tankers than fuel/oil to ship home - something seems wrong here. Construction of tankers and merchant ships largely halted except xAKLs as cannon fodder in foward areas. Supply is always tight.Ample pools of Jack-3, George-1 and Frank-A, since with PDU off only a handful of groups are allowed to use them. George-2 will be available in a week. Pools for Tojos, Oscars and Zeros remain tight due to losses. About half of the IJA and IJN fighter squadrons are training since they are stuck with older Zero and Oscar models no longer dit for frontline duty. "Production" of air skill/def skill 70/70 fighter pilots just keeps pace with losses. I have started to train fighter pilots in low-naval skills, the Oscar-IV with 2x250kg bombs is a potent strike aircraft and of little use in other roles anymore...

I remember an attitudes yours at the gates of Stalingrad with the German 6th Army, if memory serves it didn't turn out to well.

Verdun, Stalingrad, Chungking - well, must be a mentality thing.

Can't you change your bombing altitude to 2,000 feet? You will probably see higher air losses, but you should start disabling the Chinese LCUs faster this way.

Also, how come the Chinese have 500 guns? It seems their corps retained the starting compliments of mortars and 75mm guns. Not good.

One more thing. Try to fly an air raid consisting only of 2Es carrying 250kg bombs (Sally, Nell etc). Checking your combat reports I can see they average mores disabled squads with fewer aircraft bombing compared to Lilys and Sonias. Put them at 2000 feet. The fort level of Chungking must by nullifying the effect of 50 and 100kg bombs.

I have not been able to surround large numbers of Chinese units prior to their retreat to Chungking. The arty and AA units may also add a few tubes:

18th Artillery Regiment
4th Heavy Mortar Regiment
41st AA Regiment
49th AA Regiment

I'm hesitant to set my bombers to 2k. Sallies and early Sonias are not armored and sending them low into light AA is not a good idea IMO. First of all, I'm pretty loss averse and second, I have kept bomber production pretty low and more losses would be difficult to replace.

Yaab makes a good point, in my opinion. I think that 50 and 100 Kg bombs are wasted on target with good fortification. While you may not want to bomb at 2K every day to mitigate losses, why not bomb at 2K for several days before an attack with as many squadrons as possible, mixing various aircraft type, and flying at 2k. The reason is because you want the strikes to come in separately, and you want every unit with a single AA machine gun firing at those bombers. Why? Because as I understand it, units use supply for each time they fire in any combat round. Devices do not use supply, units do. Therefore, if a Chinese Corps fires 2 AA MGs at your bombers, the entire corps uses supply (shooting off their rifles, I suppose). Each time a unit fires in this way, its supply usage increases by 10% to a maximum of 100%. So 10 different bombing raids, provoking 10 different AA attacks, doubles the supply usage of every unit with a functioning AA MG.

If this causes the units in the hex to use 500 supply (which is, I believe, the amount that appears magically in Chunkking every day) before the ground combat phase, they will have 0 supply, because the supply generation phase (when the industry produces supply and it is then transferred from the base to the units in the hex) occurs after the ground combat phase... correct?

Reducing forts will see huge improvements to your attacks. It feels like a lot to lose, but you have to keep in mind that when you take the city you get ALL of those troops and their VPs. The overall totals will not disappoint. If you reduce forts every time, take a good few weeks between attacks so that troops really recover, or rotate fresh ones in, you'll get it.

In addition, any shattered IJA divisions are cheap to buy out later for the Marianas and Jimas. [;)]

Yaab makes a good point, in my opinion. I think that 50 and 100 Kg bombs are wasted on target with good fortification.

I do use the Sonias with the 50kg only for airfield attacks in order to prevent fort construction. I don't like this part of the game mechanics, it would be better to be able to stop repairs on airfields and ports when it doesn't make sense to repair them, while being able to attack forts as part of ground attack missions, slowing-down construction or even lowering fort levels. But well, it is what it is.

I'm hesitant to add the Lilys to airfield attacks at Chungking, the Sonias seem to keep it damaged well enough and the Lilys would be wasted beyond 100% damage.

Furthermore, it seems the Lilys are not doing too badly in ground attacks:

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-IIIa Oscar x 9
Ki-48-Ib Lily x 27

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
39 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

108 X 100kg bombs at 6k > 4 squads disabled

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-IIIa Oscar x 9
Ki-49-IIa Helen x 26

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-49-IIa Helen: 1 damaged

Allied ground losses:
39 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

104 x x 250kg bombs at 6k > 5 squads disabled

The Lily dive-bomber carries half the bomb load of the level bomber version, but the higher accuracy gives comparable results.

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-IIIa Oscar x 9
Ki-48-IIb Lily x 23

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-48-IIb Lily: 1 damaged

Allied ground losses:
33 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

46 x 100kg bombs > 4 squads disabled

I know, one example is statistically insignificant, but I don't see much difference between Lilys, Sallys and Helens - neither is doing great...

I have gotten myself in a quandary at Babar. I cannot allow Ed to keep that base, but I cannot allow myself to engage a battle of attrition either - but it is exactly what I am facing now.

I keep losing ships to mines at that base, two DDs from a bombardment TF heavily damaged the latest (Oct 29th 1943) turn and most likely goners before reaching port, if the subs don't get them first. Plus, the bombardments were ineffective because I forgot to assign night recon... My sweepers got sunk or damaged by subs and coastal arty. I have made the mistake to squander the few irreplaceable DMS the Japanese have, either losing them or allowing them to upgrade to escorts "by accident". The coastal minesweeper mission does not accept adding escorts, and with their slow speed they are easy prey for the dozens of subs in the area. Of course I do have dedicated ASW TFs and lots or LBA on ASW, and they have damaged a couple of subs and the "sunk ships list" claims four sub sinkings within the last 10 days (one may actually be true), but there are simply too many of them - I could walk from Ambon to Babar on their periscopes! Only a question of time before a capital ship is being sunk - in the last few turns I suffered a BB and a CA damaged by single sub torps. Btw, the Babar invasion amphib TF has made it back to Ambon, there is one undamaged AP left and half a dozen crippled AKs and LSDs will have to head for the yards. Will resort to destroyers running FT missions while converting some Yusen N to xAk-t.

In the air it is no fun either. Allied 4Es are now pounding my ground force at Babar, but that base is too far away from my operational airfields for effective land-based LRCAP. I cannot keep my carriers on station off Babar all the time, the carrier air groups need replacements, but with the limitation of 12 replacement planes per week strength is eroding - and A6M5c pools are running thin, despite 280 planes/month production. The 5c model is outclassed by the Corsairs, Lightnings and T-Bolts it is facing. With PDU off, I have only one LBA fighter group that is allowed to fly the George at the moment. The A6M8 R&D is currently at 4/44 and 76% with nine R&D factories, I should get it by the end of the year and with it a boost in production numbers. Don't think I should spend the supplies to switch R&D to Sams when the A6M8 is ready, the game may not last long enough to get Sams and with PDU off only a few LBA air groups will benefit from that airframe - I expect to have lost my carriers by then but not having the PPs to purchase back their air groups.

It looks like Babar will become my Guadalcanal - maybe even my Midway if Ed decides to throw-in his growing naval assets to get a foothold in the SRA. Woe is me!

If you look at each bomb dropped as a separate test you have 3 populations of 104, 108 and 46 tests of 3 different combinations of bombs and delivery planes. This isn't as statistically insignificant.

Especially if they all bombed under the same conditions. [8D]

Exactly what I was thinking while reading your post -- even down to your version of the "Tokyo Express" with FT destroyer runs. The similarities are chilling. You do have a big advantage in that the historical Guadalcanal was after the terrible defeat at Midway; in contrast you have suffered some attrition but nothing on the scale of Midway. On the other hand, this is also much later in the war and the Allied side has a stronger OOB as compared to the historical Guadalcanal campaign. I would think you still have the advantage at Babar of a shorter logistical path but admittedly it looks like a tough challenge for both sides.

Nov 8, 1943 - a good day in the air war!

The turn before, Ed must have observed KB camping at Damar to cover a FT run. This turn he has sent massive sweeps to Damar in order to weaken KB's CAP, followed by land-based dive bombers, torpedo bombers and skip-bombers on naval attack. Excellent tactics, although the bomber escort was relatively weak due to the massive sweep effort.

However, this turn KB wasn't at Damar anymore, so the sweeps found only some leaky CAP over Damar, while his bombers went for KB with their weak escort.

Ah; I love sound of splashes in the morning!
