[MOD] Graphic enhancement kit for Awekening the Bear and Storm of Steel

This exciting new release is a faithful adaptation of the renowned Conflict of Heroes board game that won the Origins Historical Game of the Year, Charles Roberts Wargame of the Year and the James F. Dunnigan Design Elegance Award, as well as many others!

Designed and developed in cooperation with Uwe Eickert, the original designer of Conflict of Heroes, and Western Civlization Software, the award-winning computer wargame studio, no effort has been spared to bring the outstanding Conflict of Heroes gameplay to the computer. Conflict of Heroes includes an AI opponent as well as full multiplayer support with an integrated forum and game lobby. To remain true to the core gameplay of the board game, the PC version is designed to be fun, fast and easy to play, though hard to master. The game design is also historically accurate and teaches and rewards platoon and company-level combined arms tactics without overwhelming the player with rules.

[MOD] Graphic enhancement kit for Awekening the Bear and Storm of Steel

Post by maitrebongo »

Hi,

Faced with the disastrous graphics of the PC game (compared to those of the boardgame, especially the 2nd edition) and faced with the certainty that no patch will come to fill this gap, I decided to take things in hand and publish a patch which allows to upgrade the PC game to the graphics standards of this second edition.

To replace that:

By that :

And all the units that require it (there are mostly in SOS that has not been updated as was ATB)...

Just download the zip files corresponding to each installed game (ATB and/or SOS) and unzip them in the Chits folder (for AtB units) and SOS_Chits folders (For SoS units) of the Data/UnitDecals folder of your game (You can make a backup copy if you want to come back to the previous version of these graphics).

I have made too a graphical improvement of the Awakening the Bear and the Storm Of Steel's boards, to put them at the graphical standard of those of the second edition boardgames.

To replace this :

All the maps corresponding to the AtB scenarios are available for download.

All the maps corresponding to the SOS scenarios are available for download.

Just download the zip files corresponding to each ATB and SOS scenario map (ATB01, ATB02... SOS01, SOS02...) and unzip them in the Maps folders of the Data folder of your game (You can make a backup copy if you want to come back to the previous version of these graphics).
These files are heavier (80 Mbytes per map) than the originals since the maps are more detailed and better resolution (almost equivalent to the ATB GiantMaps).

It's amazing, I replayed all the ATB and SOS scenarios with the new chits and maps and I really felt like I was playing a new game.
That's what this game should have always looked like.
It's a shame that this game no longer has any support from the developers, but I still think it's a very good base to make it a complete system of boardgames simulation, especially that Paper versions of Conflict of Heroes are very well made.

Thanks to you,

Fortunately you follow the evolutions of this game ...
Sometimes I wonder if other than you and me and a few, other people are still playing this game ...
Anyway, I would do all these improvements even if I was alone to play.

The simple idea that this gaming system (and all others like it) can be forgotten is unobjectionable for me. I have been waiting for this type of game for so long that I will not give up.

Thanks very much for these updated unit graphics, Maitrebongo, I still play, enjoy and recommend the game (and board version).

It would be great if you could improve upon the boards; I only wish I had the skills to do this. [:)]

I would like to get this game but I read some bad reviews on Steam.
Is work run corectly on win 10 ??
Is it bug free ??

With two "yes" I'll buy it on the Steam sales.

Yes, it works fine for me in Windows 10
It is bug free too...
But (There is always a "but") if you want to use the mods we made here, you have to agree to tinker a little with files and folders.
Nothing complicated, but you should know that the developers of the game no longer support it and we, the players, should take control of the fate of this game.

In my opinion, for the price, it's worth it.
I bought the 3 games Awekening the Bear, Storm of Steel and Ghost divisions recently on sale at Matrixgames.
If you ever want to buy only one, and you want to enjoy future mods, I advise you to take only Storm of Steel (since a design defect prevents ATB from running mods when it is standalone on the other hand it works if SOS is installed in addition).

Keep in mind that this is just my personal opinion.

I find the AI quite good but I can not say if it's because it is scripted in the scenarios provided by the game.
In the few scenarios I created, the AI seemed to be doing well (without scripting)... But I do not have enough perspective as a scenario creator.

Well,

I finished redesigning all the Storm of Steel maps to the graphic standards of version 2 of the game and I started uploading them.
You can download them from the first post of this thread that I updated with the download links.

Replay an SOS scenario with these new graphics and tell me what you think about it, please.
I am curious to know if it will make you the same effect as me ... [:'(]

Like your earlier counters, this does really improve the look of the game considerably.

Thank you very much for sharing your efforts with the forum. [:)] [:)][:)]

How do I switch from viewing the 3D map to these excellent top down maps? Installed per your instructions. Switching the camera view to top-down in game keeps the ugly 3D map, so I must be missing something obvious. Thank you, and many thanks for your artwork, maitrebongo.
