Japanese Ships

BB Yamashiro, Mine hits 1

Nothing like hearing the booming impact of a mine detonation and that wailing note of distress. Unless it be one your own ships. In a feat of messing up a move my bombardment TF which was supposed to be hovering a few hexes off shore from Bataan/Corregidor goes and moves right into the hex. The minefield I was aware of. I had been contemplating the best way to bombard and at the same time avoid the minefield. No need to worry any longer. Minefield has well and truly located. Even more mystifying is the damage results. Yamashiro at turns end reported the following damage 00 01 00 00!!!! The most miniscule of flooding damage. Checked her stats page and it does record that she was last hit by a Mk 6 mine, so it did happen.

SS O20 has success at 63,84 near Miri-Lutong. Kicking myself as I routed the Borneo invasion TFs to this location to forestall any aerial attempts while my TFs where awaiting the land forces. This tells me what I was expecting. A couple of Chinese Army Corps digging in amongst favourable terrain (x3 defence). To attempt to force this route (with a mere 2 Divisions) is going to be slow and costly with more Chinese Corps getting ready for the long stay in equally difficult terrain beyond. I am contemplating a different way around these Chinese forces – capture Yenan. Screen shot of the area added to give an appreciation of what I am thinking. Pie in the sky maybe but it should serve to shake things up a bit and cause Ed to consider his flanks when Yenan falls.

So, with 1941 consigned to the pages of history what have I learned.

Ed is shaping up to be a dogged Allied opponent. His submarine arm is going to haunt me all game. He is flooding the obvious choke points and anywhere that appears to have a concentration of Japanese warships. The Dutch subs are getting results and even the maligned early war USN subs get the occasional result. I am already feeling the pinch in supplying escorts for convoys. The straits between the Philippines and Formosa are a favourite. I have finally got some Lilly bombers in to do ASW work in this area. Their ASW levels are low of course but something in the air is better than nothing. As for my boats I’m fairly happy with their early return and super happy that they have accounted for Repulse and Indianapolis.

Maintaining the flow of resources into the Home Islands is going to be a job. I’ve already lagged in this area resulting in Heavy and Light Industry failures in Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka. LST alluded to this in his game notes and he is so correct. Imperial Japan must utilize a lot of the merchant fleet to haul resources back to the hungry Honshu.

The damaged ships from the beginning feature (one that I like and endorse) puts the IJN under considerable strain. The offensive ops I will soon deal with have been awaiting repairs to the all the carriers. Cruisers have been sorely tested with a couple at least needing to visit a big repair yard to deal with major damage that has accumulated. Chasing down the Manila migration is fun but with ships already sporting various levels of damage it soon becomes a recipe for further significant damage to accrue.

China is a slow go area for the time being (maybe even the whole war). Hong Kong fell quickly but the issue of a garrison in most every captured hex will frustrate the IJ ability to cobble together large-scale assaults. I am already suffering VP loses due to insufficient garrisons in some areas. My first foray into a campaign will be the attempt to capture Yenan.

The land war was an immediate Sir Robin. Almost everything on Luzon has retreated to Bataan/Corregidor and the siege there will shortly commence. Clark Field and Manila both not contested. When all the IJ land forces come together there will be 4 Divisions (4,16,21 and 48) supported by 65 Brigade, 3 Tank Regiments, 14th Army HQ and at least 9 artillery units. Battleships, Hyuga, Ise, Yamashiro and Fuso will continue with sea based bombardments if the minefields are not stumbled into again. I expect to move along quickly here once Allied supplies become depleted. 36 Allied land combat units reported at Bataan Corregidor.

Malaya is a similar story with most all land units beating a retreat to Singapore. Reports here suggest that 43 Allied land combat units are holed up along with 108 ships in port and an aerial presence of 72 fighters and 124 bombers. Forts are no doubt climbing as I am yet to commence aerial bombing to chip away at supply. Those fighters are going to have to be dealt with first. IJ land forces moving towards assaulting the causeway are 6 Divisions (Imperial Guard, 2,5,18,38 and 56) supported by Southern Army HQ, 25th Army HQ, 3 Tank Regiments, 6 artillery units and 3 engineer regiments.

My concern in this region is Java and Palembang. I certainly do fear that Ed has been pushing units into Palembang and if so this will cause considerable angst. Invasion TFs will soon be heading towards Sumatra/Java and we will soon have an appreciation of the state of play around Palembang. KB DEI (Akagi, Zuikaku, Shokaku, Zuiho and Ryujo) will provide aerial support (and play chicken with Dutch subs).

New Britain is also about to come under attack with Kavieng and shortly thereafter Rabaul is targeted. KB PAC (Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu) will provide aerial cover with surface cover being attended to by Nagato and Mutsu. Further forces are on the way for invasions of Lae and Buna followed by a drive upon Kokoda.

The air war to date has been rather quiet but I suspect it will soon heat up in quick order.

Well this does it for bombardment runs against Bataan/Corregidor. With 98 flotation damage there was no recourse other than to hit the scuttle button. After the bombardment for this turn further missions will be scrubbed. Admiral Nagumo is decidedly disconcerted. The German ship Osorno sends out a distress signal clearly indicating under attack by USN carrier aircraft as she transited to the south west of the Marshall Islands. To further complicate matters a sighting report of a mixed force of 10 US ships heading north east through the Marshall Islands has been received. Clearly there is at least 1 US carrier in the area, but could all the US carriers be present. By now they could all be together in the one place. If they are in the Marshalls they must be on a raid and if so which direction will they head in now.

Allied recon planes had also been located snooping on Nagumo’s carrier force (detection level 4/4). Poor Nagumo. What to do. Play safe and head back towards Truk in case a raid is headed that way or adopt an aggressive posture and go looking for trouble…. With just his 3 carriers (Kaga, Hiryu and Soryu).

Time to go and sleep on this one. Turn will be completed and back off to Ed first thing in the morning Oz time.

Why all those partisan attacks? Don't you leave garrisons in place? There are a lot of small company and bataillon-sized units to cover places. And you get units like the Kempeitei in due time to relieve combat units from garrison duty. Hanoi for example has ample garrison in form of the 21st brigade - don't move it out before having moved-in a replament unit of the required size. That's part of the slow-down intended.

So many options here on what the American TF might do. Could even raid as far as Truk or even hunt my carriers or blast Kwajalein and then withdraw. I’ve decided to place the 3 carriers of KB PAC a couple of hexes west of Truk just in case a raid is in store for Truk and hopefully far enough away should the Americans come looking for a reduced KB. Truk harbour has been drained of shipping.

As for the Marshalls. All search aircraft are looking in hopefully the correct directions. All submarines at Kwajalein have sortied. And the Nell group in the area are set 100% for naval attack at 100. I expect that if they find a carrier the CAP will chew them up. Hopefully CAP is set high and we might get a jump on them and get some Nells through to the target.

Once again, the die is cast. Ed is very prompt with his returns so not long to wait and watch.

It seems that this is a USN CV raid of the Marshall Islands. Search planes report masses of battleships but I know CVs are there. An Alf search plane was shot down by CAP and a little AMc at Wotje suffered a fatal 500lb bomb strike… no doubt from a searching dive bomber. Fortunately not much shipping here and I’m hoping this TF will continue its easterly bearing towards Pearl. The Nells didn’t fly. Perhaps next turn they might give it a go. Subs just couldn’t quite get into position quickly enough.

In the meantime, KB PAC will continue covering operations with Rabaul next up.

One of the down sides of jumping straight into the game without much in the way of troubling myself with working out just how I am going to deal with partisans/garrisons. Kempeitei units are being shipped out for garrison duty as they turn up in the Home Islands. Taking note to of the small company sized units turning up - so hard to bite the bullet and consider using them for garrison duty when some of them have 80+ experience. Thanks for the 21st Brigade tip. I'll check it out. And I am most certainly feeling the slow down in China. I think you are on a winner here with all of those dot bases that have to have those pesky admin forces dealt with and then of course there is the garrison issue. Enjoying the game very much.

My search pilots finally tell me what I knew to be so at the Marshall Islands. Carriers located heading east. One thing it does tell me is that Ed is quite prepared to deploy his carriers when he sees opportunity to do so. So glad to next to all the shipping from the Marshalls was cleared out weeks ago. Happy too that I made the decision not to hare off with the depleted KB chasing what does appear to be at least a carrier force of equal strength. Shame the sub couldn’t find a carrier to shoot at but at least she had a go. Good to know the US carriers are heading back to Pearl. At least for some time they will not be making a surprise appearance in the DEI.
