Culling the herd or protecting people to stupid to protect themselves? I usually favor the former.

To be fair, has anyone actually presented any proof the guy is wrong? I mean, where is there even the slightest actual evidence that the earth is round?

Well, what he says he believes and what he built/spent might be a prank to make people wig out and give him some notoriety. Hard to understand how he could really believe what he is saying (unless he drank too much bathtub moonshine with lead in it).

I think I am coming around to this point of view. He's probably just a con artist. Especially considering his recent launch cancellation.
The Washington Post has raised the question of whether Hughes’ flat-eartherism may be more opportunistic than sincere, pointing out that he only “converted” to the philosophy after failing to come up with enough money to fund his latest project on his own.

Getting his hobby funded by the gullible! P.T. Barnum would be so proud. [:D]

***Dead thread-raiser alert***

Mark Hughes, the amateur astronaut and flat-earth conspiracy believer, died yesterday in a failed rocket launch. The rocket nosedived into the ground after a brief climb.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51602655
A US daredevil pilot has been killed during an attempted launch of a homemade rocket in the Californian desert.

"Mad" Mike Hughes, 64, crash-landed his steam-powered rocket shortly after take-off near Barstow on Saturday.

A video on social media shows a rocket being fired into the sky before plummeting to the ground nearby.

Hughes was well-known for his belief that the Earth was flat. He hoped to prove his theory by going to into space.

Well....I guess he did finally earn the Darwin Award BBfanboy nominated him for. [;)]

Unfortunately, having a total disregard for science is probably not a good prescription for designing a rocket. Sadly, it seems there were just too many people willing to fund this man's eccentric ego.

The BBC article is not a real obituary. The question that remains unanswered is whether or not he reproduced prior to his demise. If he did IMHO he does not deserve a Darwin.

Just my 1 cent.

He lived and died while having fun apparently, doing what he wanted to do. The guy even had a world record on his name.
So he believes in fairytales?

Billions of people on this planet believe in fairytales about mystical Cloud people, for which a lot of them are willing to kill in great numbers.

This guy wasn't hurting anyone other than himself with his fairytales.

Billions of people believing in Cloud people sounds sorta like an exaggeration. I didn't realize that I had so many followers.[8|]
