Madeira is in the wrong place

Fury Games has now signed with Matrix Games, and we are working together on the next Strategic Command. Will use the Slitherine PBEM++ server for asynchronous multi-player.

Madeira is in the wrong place

Post by PJL1973 »

Can anyone explain why Madeira is about 5 hexes further north than it should be? It should basically be west of Safi on the map, but instead it's due west of Tangiers. Now I can accept that places may have been moved a hex here and there for aesthetic and gameplay reasons, but I can't see why Madeira is so inaccurate compared to actual maps.

Not only that ...

In a recent solo game, Spain joined the Axis and took out Portugal. Madeira [Funchal] became an Axis port. Eventually the Allies retook Portugal and Spain. All of the Spanish outposts became Allied areas (and ports), but Madeira remained an Axis outpost until the German [Berlin] collapse.

Please note: This may actually be a bug; not merely another bizarre design intent. [;)]

Wow ... how about 'an honest and innocent oversight' ?

My answer to PJL would be that with so many people playing over the past year plus, it is obviously of not great importance where Madeira is. I would say that for historical accuracy, however, that I am also interested to know if it was a decision to put it where it for a reason, otherwise it could be moved.

Hi PJL

It must have been accidental, it wasn't a design decision.

Hi DeriKuk

When liberating a country, all of its locations have to be liberated by Allied forces, so if you didn't land a unit in Madeira then it would remain in Axis hands.

It's different when a country surrenders, as Spain appears to have done based on your description, because when a country surrenders all of the country will ordinarily come under the conqueror's control.

So this means that, if we take France in 1944 as an example, the liberation of Paris isn't sufficient to liberate all French territory, the Allies must advance and drive the enemy out. The principle is the same for other locations too.
