Saw that. Not looking good for the guys in the southern hemisphere [:(]
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
RE: OT: Missing Argentine submarine
I wonder if there is a continental shelf like the Grand Banks that might mean they are in water shallow enough to rest on the bottom without crushing. That might mean a rescue if a deep rescue vessel can reach there in time. The USN has offered their vessels to aid in other sub accidents.

I'm sure they would again in this case too. The US, UK and Chile have offered satellite recon assets too.
A second news source (Guardian-UK) indicates that there was a fire onboard that damaged the submarine's radio. Let's hope it's just a case of radio failure and that the submarine and crew are recovered soon. [:(]

According to the latest news that I have, the submarine has been detected and navy officials believe there have been no fatalities. It was operating in the area of Porta Madryn as a part of a series of fleet exercises designed to coordinate the defense Argentina's off-shore oilwells. The vessel was recently overhauled in 2014. New Diesel and electric motors were installed as well as new batteries. It seems one of these batteries (probably made in China) failed and caught fire, causing the submarine to lose radio communications. If you read Spanish, here is the latest. https://www.taringa.net/posts/noticias/ ... arino.html http://www.lanacion.com.ar/2083159-desa ... de-rescate
RE: OT: Missing Argentine submarine
Apparently the reports, "from sources inside naval command," that the submarine has been located are "unconfirmed." I am not sure what that means. The submarine had the first woman as crewmember in the history of the Argentine submarine fleet. What is the old mariner's proverb about women and ships? https://www.elliberal.com.ar/noticia/37 ... a-san-juan

Not to put a damper on things, but similar remarks were made when the Kursk went missing.

Yup. Also, the submarine was originally missing on Wednesday. Two days of active search and no 'official' sign of discovery? Doesn't sound very good...

The spokesman for the navy has been as positive as possible, stating repeatedly that the only thing that is known for certain is the submarine lost communications. He has stated that he does not want to alarm the families unduly or to "give them false hope."
The submarine's last reported position was within the Argentine Sea, in relatively shallow water, which may allow for a rescue operation if the submarine can be found. The submarine has the capacity to remain submerged for 7 days. There was a major storm in that region Wednesday that continued over until Thursday with wind speeds in excess of 90 Km/h and very high waves. This was a very large Atlantic storm that affected the whole of central Argentina. I lost electricity the entire day Wednesday, and I live much closer to the Andes than the Atlantic. Wednesday night the storm blew down a communications tower, and the area in which I live lost internet and cell-phone communications until Friday morning.
I have heard some crazy theories here about the incident. I have seen one person speculating that the navy is lying about the last known location of the submarine. That it was actually on a secret mission to the Malvinas (Fauklands) and that it was sunk by the British navy. I have also heard someone claim that its loss was a lie so as to request the British to divert their ASW assets from the Malvinas to help in the search. So ridiculous.

Look for a USN ship with a big dent in its prow. There was another accident involving a tugboat.

Yeah the conspiracy theorists will dream up anything to get their opinions out there. Makes them feel empowered somehow.ORIGINAL: Aurorus

On the non-conspiracy possibility side, when Canada bought some mothballed subs from the UK, one of them transiting to Canada had a severe electrical fire after a storm caused much water to cascade down the hatch (the sub was not certified to dive yet because it had been in mothballs for years). The crew was in peril from toxic smoke but managed to get the fire out with only one man requiring hospitalization. The sub was crippled and had to be towed to Canada IIRC. Refurbishment took years. I think Milo Mindbender was working with the UK on that sale!

RE: OT: Missing Argentine submarine
Speaking of Milo, Gorge Clooney is making a 6 episode TV show of Catch 22. Hopefully it will have some cameos by the original cast.
RE: OT: Missing Argentine submarine
The crew of the submarine attempted to contact Argentine naval bases on 12 occasions yesterday using a satellite phone. The Office of the Navy is optimistic that they can use the satellite calls to determine the location of the submarine. A U.S. company that specializes in geo-location using satellites is assisting in the effort. If you can read Spanish, here is the latest news.

RE: OT: Missing Argentine submarine
Very strange.
RE: OT: Missing Argentine submarine
I wish the crew all the luck in world. From experience, I have learned that submarines are dangerous places.
RE: OT: Missing Argentine submarine
And I stress the word "dangerous".

How does one "misuse" a toilet? What exactly occurred in that toilet? This raises so many questions.
RE: OT: Missing Argentine submarine
Well, to empty a toilet whilst under the sea, there would have to be pressure and valves involved. Get them in the wrong order and the pressure from outside + the toilet contents come inside!
