Origins of the RAF's uniform

Post by loki100 »

Nice article on how unexpected things interact.

Apparently the Tsar ordered a nice set of cloth to make new blue uniforms for his army. The Bolsheviks didn't want the goods so the Scottish textile firm that had made them was facing bankruptcy.

At the same time the RAF had just been created as a seperate military command and needed a uniform. So they were fitted out in the cloth originally ordered by the Russians.

Better still the original proposed ranks were:

Ensign, Lieutenant, Flight-Leader, Squadron-Leader, Reeve, Banneret, Fourth-Ardian, Third-Ardian, Second-Ardian, Ardian, Air Marshal.

Ardian was derived from the Gaelic 'Ard' meaning Chief and 'Ian' or 'Eun' meaning Bird

The 100th anniversary of the RAF is next year.
