I'm not sure I believe Pres. Trump or Sec Def Mattis on this. During the campaign Trump had, on at least 2 occasions I remember, suggested large increases in the nuclear arsenal and back then had to have explained to him that 1) it's not necessary and 2) there are treaty limits.

So the NBC story is consistent with his past public statements.

Of course, we'll never really know for sure. It's another case of "he said, she said"

Kevin,

Thanks for the Akula reference article. I've included it in the reference library.

Initially Akula was once named Typhoon by western intelligence (probably not NATO because Soviet vessels are rarely NATO-coded), but then the 20 kT kraken launches while Soviet Navy names it “Typhoon”.

It’s a confusing move indeed because military intelligence often use NATO code or other representive’s callings to non-Western arsenals, especially the case when they use numeral names.

There is a confusing situation because of overlapping of Russian and NATO naming of different submarines.
SSBN pr.941 has Russian name Akula and NATO - Typhoon.
SSN pr.971 has Russian name Shchuka-B (Pike) and NATO - Akula. Her modifications have NATO names Improved Akula, Akula II, Akula III.
Gepard this is a name of K-335. She differs from Akula II by electronics, form of TASS sonodome.

Canadian Resolve-class oiler ‘Asterix’ hits the water

Post by cdnice »

Canadian shipbuilder Davie Shipbuilding launched the Royal Canadian Navy’s Project Resolve auxiliary oiler replenishment ship ‘Asterix’ this weekend at its shipyard in Quebec.
The naval support ship started life as containership MV Asterix and was converted into the naval support ship after arriving in Lévis in October 2015.

The shipbuilder said commissioning of all onboard systems began in early September and the ship is expected to start its sea trials on November 16, 2017, prior to achieving full operational capability.
Over 900 Canadian companies have contributed to the build of the ship, including the supply of key military-specified equipment such as its Integrated Navigational and Tactical System (INTS), its NATO-compliant Replenishment-At-Sea (RAS) systems and its naval Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), Dawie Shipbuilding said.

Vicefield, Chairman of Davie Shipbuilding, commented, “The delivery of this ship has clearly demonstrated that there is a Canadian shipyard capable of delivering complex naval platforms on time, to budget and at internationally competitive prices. In the knowledge that the Royal Canadian Navy needed this ship urgently, our 1,400 staff have worked day and night to ensure that it is not only delivered on time but that it is of a quality that will be able to serve Canada proudly for decades to come.

The Asterix is a 182.5 meters long vessel capable of transporting up to 7000 tonnes of fuel at speeds of up to 25 knots. It features two cranes allowing the loading and unloading of containers which are accessible at sea, a helicopter deck, two hangars for helicopters, a hospital able to accommodate 60 patients and kitchens able to feed 1,000 people.

The ship has been privately financed by Davie and will be leased to the Canadian government while the Federal Fleet Services, a Davie sister company, will operate the ship with a mixed crew of merchant seafarers and Royal Canadian Navy personnel.

"Bottom lines: before embracing open architecture, the DCGS spent about 70 percent of its funding on infrastructure and 30 percent on the capabilities and applications that users needed to accomplish their mission. Now those numbers are flipping."

Today:"The Navy's helicopter-like Fire Scout drone can now operate an advanced sensor giving it increased ability to detect and destroy enemy mines and submarines from a Littoral Combat Ship."

So a USN ship received a Warning Order to prep for a tomahawk strike on North Korea

I wonder if Trump thinks he can pull off the same thing he did in Syria, or if there were more assets that would be included if they actually went through with a strike.

Germany has no operational subs. I guess they do not really need them anyway.

Scuttlebutt has been that Osan will see their Viper squadrons replaced by F-35s in some of the first deployments.

This is over a year old but I believe they are building to receive a couple Sqns in Alaska already. Not too far away.

Although the Block 40's at Osan are getting old (1990-91 vintage) so that is possible - it may be a bit too close to the fire when there are other options close by.
