Aircraft Loss Messages in Combat Reports

Post by witpqs »

Hey,

Your input with other messages has been invaluable and headed off late discovery of things that would have needed changing.

I am plowing through aircraft loss messages in the combat reports and I have found there are message for:

damaged
destroyed
destroyed by flak
destroyed on ground

But there are no messages (specifically) for:

damaged by flak
damaged on ground

I figure those conditions must all be counted in the "damaged" tallies.

Does this agree with your observations?

Yep, my experience is that only destroyed differentiate by causes, damaged does not.

Don't forget "crashes on landing" and sometimes followed by "and is written off"
And occasionally you might see "is intercepted while returning to base".
Not part of the "damaged/destroyed" messages exactly but still descriptive of what causes one or the other.

Search through nearly 17K of individual combat reports - damaged only shows up on your own aircraft - I guess because they come back and the damage is noticed. Agreed in the ops report you get the other styles of detailed reports, but they are in Ops not Combat. - and again are for your own forces.

Those are in operations and/or combat events reports, not combat reports. I will get to them... [:)]

Roger
I have lots of examples in combat reports of damaged for both sides in combat reports. Agree that the other reports give only your slice, including aircraft which must have been reported damaged in the combat report then are shown as crashing in the ops report.

Adding example from 12/7/41
Morning Air attack on Pearl Harbor , at 180,107

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid detected at 116 NM, estimated altitude 23,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 38 minutes

Japanese aircraft

B5N2 Kate x 144
D3A1 Val x 126

Well they are right there in the combat report! And the entire combat report is in the database, broken down into the individual battles. [:)]
