[FIXED DB v468] Sea Darts going haywire (v1.12 B 936.18)

Post by Excroat3 »

I'm playing the latest version of Gunner98's Mozambique madness scenario, and as I'm trying to defend my carrier group from enemy attack aircraft, I notice that my Sea Darts are being fired then quickly losing their datalink and going blind. And even more frustratingly, my ships keep firing them, to no effect. Is this a bug, or some setting I am missing? I kept losing the datalinks both when the ships were radar silent and when they had their radars on. Save attached. Just let the scenario play and watch what happens when my ships launch at the enemy fighters. Running v1.12 Build 936.18.

Dug into this one... it's an RCS aspect edge case issue. The MiGs have much smaller frontal RCS than side RCS. The Sea Dart FCR is (barely) able to produce a good track beam-on and fires, however the target turns, putting it nose towards the radar, and track is lost.

If you open the scenario in the scenario editor and plot a course for the aircraft due north, the missiles guide fine.

So what should a solution look like?

One is to change the WRA maximum firing range for this target type.

The other is to do some further digging on the Type 909 to see if the CW power output should be higher.

I cranked up the CW power a bit. It now stands at 5000 Watt CW, same as AN/SPG-51D. By comparison, SPG-51B is 1kW.

Thank you for the help! So, whenever the aircraft goes evasive, the Sea Darts lose lock because of the RCS difference? I should have noticed that and pulled in the range where my SAMs were allowed to fire from.

Yes, exactly.

I'm marking this one resolved. Thanks [8D]
