Can't launch from Steam with resolution error

Post by rocketman71 »

I usually have my laptop connected to a 1920*1200 resolution monitor and tried today for the first time to launch the game directly on the laptop which has a native 1920*1080 resolution screen. The start menue appears but with some error boxes like this screenshot

I get a couple of more of those and then this one:

despite not being on that resolution (checked the control panel).

Can't get further than that :(

I've been getting those youtube errors the last couple of days.
The message comes up 2 or 3 times and the game fails to start.
I close the error boxes and hit play again and it works.

Today the strange Youtube script error messages have disappeared, but the last one persists which makes the game impossible to start.

Try to change the resolutions in the .ini file manually to 1920x1080.

Couldn't find a resolution setting in the SC3.ini file, so I first tried the #Window_width/height and then the #Original_screen_width/height - but none worked.

I also tried to start the editor but get the same error message.

Update: I have tried to launch in "admin" mode and also set the game to run on the integral graphics card (not the high-end one) but still can't launch the game. Very frustrating.

Update: got it to work at 1600*900 resolution. Doesn't look great, but at least it works again.

Hi Rocketboy,

Try deleting the SC3.ini file and it will be recreated to the defaults including the default desktop resolution.

I'll try that. FYI I just got back home today and hooked the laptop up to my monitor. The game launched but didn't adapt to full screen mode but stayed in 16:9 format while on 16:10 monitor. So there might be something funky going on with the ini-file.

That might just be an issue when going from one resolution on the laptop to a different resolution on your desktop. In this case if you are switching resolutions from laptop to desktop then the easiest thing for now is to delete the SC3.ini file in your user folder each time you switch back and forth and it will reset to the current resolution.

The file can typically be found here:

C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\Strategic Command WWII - War In Europe

I deleted the ini-file but the recreated one also had the wrong resolution, so I manually edited it to the correct resolution. Now it works again.
