I just went through this AAR from outset....bored at work. This is the Somme on the water!! I have never seen such "over the top boys" carnage in '42. You chaps will have to call a truce until '44 because you are both out of ships. The IJN can't do attrition on a 1-1 basis. What major units do you still have available? Your opponent can't have many.

Yes all true what you noted, it is pretty bloody on the seas for both sides, but more for the Allies. In the air Allies do a bit better due to 4e and now P40Ks. In landwarfare almost every operation was going good for IJA however. The former Allied player forced us sadly to commit more heavy surface ships and consequently we lost 2 good BBs, 1 soso BB (Yamato) and 1 soso BC (Kongo class). But the other side losses are much heavier, he lost lots of BBs and crusisers. His CVs suffered terribly too - I guess he must have 2 or so left (or even only 1?). ASAIR only in 43 the Allies get new CVs and CVE/CVLs too, lots of them. But the "KB" should rule up to mid 43 if no terrible mistakes are made or Allied subs penetrate the asw screens.

The new player however surprised me again that he also used cruiser forces and lost 2-3 more of them for our loss of 1 CA and 1 CL (these are not lost to enemy heavy SF combatants but to PTs and subs!). I had thought the enemy high command would try to preserve all bigger combat ships seeing the losses of the past. But for sure they must have their reasons.

Allies are a bit better off in DD and TK/AO losses..and AK types both lost a lot, but both have enough of these.

Edit, the good land results are not only due to decent leadership and good troops of the IJA but also to some mistakes the former player made. He used to much Vorwärtsverteidigung (forward defense?) imho. Eg. the Rangoon area defense and the complete China theater was pretty heavy on losses, as well some later India battles.

Will post some loss and economy figures in the new year (on 1st or 2nd Jan43).

But here is a bit already:

- Supply, slowly growing, all areas are supplied only Rennel and Lunga, which are bombed around the clock are out
- Fuel, pretty steady
- Oil, slow decline
- Arm, ca. 150k
- Veh, ca. 12k
- We have eng bonus (=over 500) for Ha32,33,34,35,45 Ha43 is in research and doing good Jet eng is in research but slow. But last plane (HelenB) for 34 is ready to build so we can perhaps convert a 34 plant..
- Many Jack + George + Tony facs repaired and researching, but non for Frank
- Building ca. 70 OscIIb, 80-100 TojoIIa, 15-30 Nick, 120-140 Zero M5. Have small pool of Tojos and older fighters. But not so much Zero, Nicks or the newest Oscar. Not build many army 2E bombers only up to 20 in pool of older models, but now the Helen IIb has finished only building these now. For navy 30-40 in pool for each Betty and latest Nell. Plus 40 or so older Nells.
- Some CVs were accelerated (only the Unryu ones not the larger more expensive fuel burners), but points are scarce now so instead accelerating DDs und E/SCs (seems subs are also the biggest threat, Alles losing so many CVs and cruisers). Have turned on Musashi to build, can turn off and therefore push 2 or 3 CVs again.
- Points are out for merchants, building all tankers (minus the vsmall ones) and the larger, better AKs. Depending on situation turn them on or off.

RE: WITP: FE (fools edition) PBM Scen2 stock Japan AAR starts in May42

Post by Alpha77 »

From 16. (18.) Dec - 20. Dec 1942:

This PBM was restarted after I had no time to play, now at 4-5 turns/week

Seems I still have the combat report only from 18. Dez untill 3. Jan

Situation not much changed, in India it is "drolle de guerre" (silent war with not much happening, it seems a stalement). In Northern Australia, the Allie forces took all bases back, we only have left Broome). The Aussies send 4 armor regiments to Derby routing out my 3-4 AV left the rest were support troops. They followed the escaping troops on the desert road to Derby. China was mostly taken but bases in the north left, we send some small contigent up, but was stopped on the road - not important really.

And still the biggest carnage in the Salomones, Allies failed to take Tassa and now I see movements from Lunga, so he sends even more troops, must then be at least 4 US divisions with lots of arty, tanks etc. We still have supply there but regualar 4E missions with sweeps before make the airfield no usuable anymore. Also when the US took Tulagi in a quick move, to quick unload and capture to even react from the IJ side, the position is at Tassa is now quite isolated, would not make sense to base good fighters there anyway imho. Lots of sub and surface combats there still, the IJN loses I believe 2 more CLs and 1 more managed to limp back meanwhile to Rabaul - not so bad - but a lot of good DDs too. IN scen1 this would already be very troubling, in scen2 the IJN gets more DDs though.

- Aussie and NZ AM(c)s clear our mines left there as present

- We had send a surface minelayer force, I believe they laid some or most of the mines, before encounted by superior force:

Twice good news, the RO-103 survived and fixed all damgage at Rabaul, except 6 major points and is already at sea again. As well one of the CLs that ran into so many enemies is fixing its damage completly. Need to check the final loss tally at the end of 42 for these hard salomones fights, as said the DD loses were the worst....

From 26. Dec - 31. Dec 1942:

So lets look at the action untill 1943 new years eve, shall we? And a small reminder, the current Allied player is handycapped that most CVs were lost by the first. Also that the 1st turn was "Historical" setting which led to higher losses for PH strike. I started an Allied game (scen27 "silver"which is a revised scen2) vs. the AI months ago, which I also play a few turns a week. There the "historical" setting at PH also led to huge combat ship losses for the US.

- small IJN cruiser fleet bombards Marines at Tassa for almost no losses to them.
- bigger IJN fleet with 2 x Kongo bombards Tulagi with better results:

Night Naval bombardment of Tulagi at 114,137

We can establish at Tassa are 3 Marine divs, at Tulagi at this time were at least major parts of 2 more Infdivs.

- B24s and B25s bomb the 4th and 6th guards divs in the Indian countryside, tried to hide them but werefound by overflying recon planes I guess. Only 2 squads destroyed but lots disabled (which were all recovered meanwhile)

Cant remeber what the mission of these 2 DDs was and why they were caught in range, but they were lucky, the weather also was bad:

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Thousand Ships Bay at 114,136

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid spotted at 20 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 11 minutes

- we lose a somewhat bigger AK to S class sub in the north, also a RO class sub was either sunk or heavily damaged near Tulagi by USN APDs.

- 4 DDs on bombardement mission to Port Hedland, find 2 lone medium AKs, sink them and hit not much at this Australian small port (2 hits) which is build up however

- Otherwise the usual air bombing at Horn and Rennel etc., Allied AMs have now cleared most if not all mines left at Tulagi..

- Recon and subs reported quite a bit of ship trafic near Tulagi suggesting the Allies are loading the bigger units with which they captured Tulagi to send them on new missions. Trying to interdict these but we had bad luck with a collision in the small CL fleet which led to 2 ships stumbling on enemy mines and to higher losses on DDs again - together with a fleet action. As can be seen the ememy mostly uses smaller cheaper ships there which loss does not hurt Allies much (I guess).

- 3 sweeps of Tassa (no one there anymore) and one of the biggest attacks by almost 60 4Es there..

- we sweep Tulagi and Lunga with M5 Zeros, we get a 3:1, with the enemy air weakened by the bombardements from the sea before. However the sweeps went in smaller packets, weather or coordination interfered (?)

- USN DDs bombard Tabiteua and get a good number of hits on this outpost, we bombard troops at Derby with DDs for not much damage.

- Betties find and hit something near the northern OZ coast, very rare:

RE: WITP: FE (fools edition) PBM Scen2 stock Japan AAR starts in May42

Post by Alpha77 »

This pbm re-started, I have a few combat reports for January 1943 which the more intersting ones I will post. All in all the situation did not change much, except that the Allies became more active in India once again as well of course in the Salomones. Our troops were still trapped at Tassafaronga but for a while did quite good, however they more and more isolated, the US sent more troops and we were not willing to risk a main effort to somehow rescue the troops. We also had some "catastrophic" events excluding this huge waste of troops in hindsight. Both sides suffered from these catastrophes, one can guess which are worse.

On the 11th of January a ill fated surface battle near Tulagi took place. Our force lost 1 older CA, 1 CL and 2 DDs. The Allies I believe lost no ship only damaged ones. Also at Munda we lost a Kagero class whichw as damaged before by mines and then by 6inch/47 gun(s). It floundered at the harbour. So quite a blow.

The Japanese presence in North Australia ended, but achived the mission of delaying the Allies a bit there.

Allies try to sweep mines at Munda which most likely is perhaps the next target for them, we laid quite a lot of them there. They sweep some mines yes, but their losses of mine warfare ships increases too. But the Allies have many of them. Also Allied subs are now quite dangerous they did sink already some big tankers and a bunch of smaller vessels even if good escorted.

Reports for January 43 only if something actually happened:
