New Scenario for testing Cocos Islands India v Australia 1978

Post by Jorm »

Cocos Islands

Historical Background

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands, located about one third of the way across the Indian ocean occupy an important strategic location allowing extension of regional force projection, surveillance and secure lines of communication. They are also located close to Indian ocean and south china sea shipping lanes. Its strategic importance is highlighted by the 2400 metre airfield that was constructed in WWII.

In 1978, Due to the very poor treatment of the islanders and the feudal system of governance by the then owners, the Clunies- Ross family, the Australian government forced the islands owners, to sell the island to them using the threat of compulsory acquisition.

This scenario explores what may have happened if the disgruntled Clunies - Ross family instead sold the island to India.

Are the islands CocUs or CocOs? you seem to use both in various places, incl. scenario title and descriptions and briefs.

Next thing, well, NEED MOAR Mk81s on the carrier :)

Other than that, looks like a fun scenario, while I'm still midway in it.

Well, looks like I finished sea part of it, killing most ships, two or three subs, and a SAM, but I can't seem to be able to identify any of the enemy ground units. Apparently there a a few AAAs (S60?) somewhere on land, but I can't spot them. I tried using A-4s, helos, and F-111s for spotting all to no avail.

Finally, at 18 hours to go, I decided not to waste any more aircraft on spotting, and got this (with no scoring? - does the scoring work?)

Nice
when did you go after the Indian carrier , pretty early ? and with the F-111's ?
I've played this trough at least 5 times myself and never went after the CV. very interesting to get playtest results for things i would not have tried .good one !!

Brilliant that you got to bang off a few Ikara's. All your ASW back on the carrier or the subs get close ?

There was a little surprise pack for Christmas Island, ill have to change it i think...
thanks for the very useful feedback

cheers

I sent Orions out early to see what in there. Once they spotted the formation, I figured it must be carrier group, and I sent F-111s after the formation. I am a firm believer in destroying aircraft on the ground, and going after the carrier looked like a logical move.

Subs got pretty close to me, close enough to fire a couple of torpedoes, both misses. Actually it was the other way round - I got pretty close to them - I figured I will move close to destroy the SAM with naval guns, and I did, encountering subs in process. However I must admit I will often fire ASROC or other kind of torpedo in general direction of any unidentified subsurface contact, or a suspect sub location. Fish are not afraid of a torpedo, so fish continue on course and speed; the submarine, however, has to evade - this is how I tell subs from fish. Basically if sonar cannot id the contact quick enough, I will rather kill the contact than continue trying to id. Therefore, my torpedo expenditures are little higher than one might expect.

On the second thought, this must have something to do with the fact I had sonars in passive mode, but no sprint-and-drift. Next time, I will perhaps go with active sonars.

Interesting that you were going to use naval guns on the island, that was my initial intent when setting up thescenario, but thought id rather leave the execution of the mission to the player.
yeah 1978 sensors are a weird mix of great on the C.F Adams class DDG and not so great for most all else....

thanks for the feedback, very useful !
