RE: Sleepless on Samoa, the Sequel (wneumann vs Jolly Pillager)

Post by wneumann »

Summary of Operations 02/02/45

Southwest Pacific: Current base status at Shortlands – 112K supply on hand (unchanged).

Current base status at Kiriwina Island – 64K supply on hand (unchanged).

Current status of Buna base – 271K supply and 16K fuel on hand (unchanged).

Current status of Milne Bay base – 714K supply and 106K fuel on hand.

Current status of Port Moresby base – 1.28 million supply and 120K fuel on hand. Ship loading operations to embark combat LCU from Buna to Australia via sea transport from Port Moresby have resumed.

Unexpected Japanese fighter sweeps launched against Port Moresby. My estimate of this action is that Pillager was possibly planning naval air strike actions against Allied transport ships loading LCU from Buna for transfer to Australia and the Jap fighter sweeps below were a preliminary action to take out Allied CAP fighters in advance of sending in (Jap) LBA bombers to attack the ships. Pillager has successfully used this tactic against US Escort Carrier force CVE's at Kiriwina Island and Shortlands. In any case, a welcome "gift" of 180+ Jap fighters destroyed over Port Moresby (along with pilot attrition) at the cost of 14 US planes. AAR's follow.

Summary of Operations 02/07/45 (continued)

Japanese Home Islands: Sigint entry report for 2/07 indicates Jap 13th Infantry Division (destroyed at Buna) now located in Tokyo, this unit apparently being rebuilt.

Central Pacific: Current base status at Abemama (after raids below) – 109K supply on hand, airfield service damage 15, runway damage 96. Japanese LBA airfield bombing strikes continue. AAR’s follow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Afternoon Air attack on Abemama, at 136,130

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 3 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 0 minutes

Japanese aircraft

Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 7

Aircraft Attacking:

Airfield Attack: 2 x 250 kg GP Bomb

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detected status of Jap base at Tabiteuea – airfield damage 83, port damage 1. No airfield bombing raids against Tabiteuea launched this game turn. All B-29 bomber squadrons currently stood down to recover damaged planes and/or rest pilots, squadrons are being transferred forward from Noumea to Luganville (shorten attack range to Tabiteuea and other targets) as they return to full operational status..

Sigint entries for 2/07 report intercepted Japanese radio transmissions from Roi-Namur, Eniwetok and Marcus Is. Detected status of the three bases show no visible Japanese forces or activity at any of these locations.

Australia: Transport convoy EX-98 (24 ships) arrives from Eastern US via Capetown with 116K supply and 1600 fuel cargo aboard.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 117 aircraft (99 fighters, 18 bombers), manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 72(129), light industry 9(32), no visible Jap TF, 18 Jap LCU.

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – 189 aircraft (170 fighters, 9 bombers), oil production 202(99), refinery 96(5), 13 Jap LCU. Current intelligence data has 21 Jap LCU identified at Magwe (some of these moving north into China via Lashio), this report obviously less than fully accurate. Jap LCU reported in Magwe include 2 infantry units, 2 tank units, 12 flak units, 4 aviation base support units plus HQ Burma Area Army. At this point it’s less than clear exactly what Pillager transferred northward from Magwe into southern China and where it is going.

Detected base status at Lashio from aerial recon shows 1 Jap LCU (-4 from last game turn). A group of 7 unidentified Jap LCU visible on-map in the adjacent road hex N of Lashio (hex location 63, 46).

No reported Allied or Japanese plane losses this game turn inBurma-India theatre area.

Allied air operations continue against Japanese LCU along Burma-India border area. Latest AAR’s follow.
