27.12.1941 LUCKY RYUJO

CENT.PAC. AREA

Our sub blows big xAK our of the water:

Submarine attack near Christmas Island at 174,141

Japanese Ships
SS I-170

Allied Ships
xAK Ruth Alexander, Torpedo hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage

xAK Ruth Alexander is sighted by SS I-170
SS I-170 attacking on the surface
Massive explosion on xAK Ruth Alexander

PI AREA:

During 26.12. our nav.search has spotted group of 3 destroyers moving north from Balikpapan probably going to attempt an ambush on our Manado landing. Orders were given for CVL Ryujo TF to position itself between enemy TF and SW Mindanao while CA TF will close enemy retreat point towards Balikpapan. Not one of my TFs had any DL on itself. This is what really happened:

Night Time Surface Combat, near Tawi Tawi at 72,92, Range 8,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CVL Ryujo
CS Mizuho
TB Otori
TB Kiji
TB Kamo

Allied Ships
DD Banckert
DD Witte de With, Shell hits 1
DD Van Ghent

Maximum visibility in Partly Cloudy Conditions and 64% moonlight: 11,000 yards
Range closes to 10,000 yards...
Range closes to 8,000 yards...
CONTACT: Japanese lookouts spot Allied task force at 8,000 yards
CONTACT: Allied lookouts spot Japanese task force at 8,000 yards

Ryujo manages to avoid several torpedoes and land a single hit of the engagement. Not bad. It seams enemy was not going after Manado after all but to ambush our landing forces at Cagayan.

Afternoon phase begins as our CAs intervene and Dutch DDs barely managed to escape:

Day Time Surface Combat, near Jolo at 73,94, Range 16,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CA Myoko
CA Haguro
CA Nachi
DD Kuroshio
DD Oyashio
DD Hatsukaze

Allied Ships
DD Banckert, Shell hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Witte de With, Shell hits 2, on fire
DD Van Ghent, Shell hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage

CONTACT: Allied lookouts spot Japanese task force at 22,000 yards
Range closes to 16,000 yards...

But not for long as our CAs pursuit the Dutch and put them under for good:

Day Time Surface Combat, near Gorontalo at 72,95, Range 21,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CA Myoko
CA Haguro
CA Nachi
DD Kuroshio

And then shock happens as large Allied fleet jumps up on our retreating CV TF in an area between Celebes sea and Babeldaob:

Image

Day Time Surface Combat, near Talaud-eilanden at 79,96, Range 17,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CVL Ryujo
CS Mizuho, Shell hits 19, heavy fires
TB Otori, Shell hits 1
TB Kiji
TB Kamo, Shell hits 2, heavy fires

Allied Ships
CL Tromp, Shell hits 1
DD Barker, Shell hits 1
DD Paul Jones
DD Pillsbury
DD Whipple, Shell hits 1
DD Vampire, Shell hits 2
DD Evertsen
DD Stronghold

Muzuho and Kamo will probably survive but danger is still around. It’s mind-boggling just how Allies managed to miss such opportunity to bag an CVL. Probably due to bad commanders. Oh well.

In the other news in PI area, our AMc’s make another kamikaze de-mining attempt at Bataan and are blasted out of the sea just like their predecessors. We lose 5 of them for unknown number of mines cleared. I hope this will suffice to make our BB bombardment runs possible.

Our landing at Sidate near Manado is interrupted by another sub who tries it’s luck with a deck gun:

I know, never saw that coming, my focus was on that DD TF, those guys came out of nowhere. Their orders were probably not set on naval attack and patrol, otherwise they would kick my ass easily. Their commanders were probably crap too. But you're right on my sloppiness with escorts, this kind of thing will not happen again. Crazy thing, I have pretty decent nav.search in that area and it picks up 3 DDs but not major fleet of CL and 7 DDs...

CENT.PAC. AREA:

After changing truly awful commanders, we’ve sent a pair of AMCs to conduct merchant raids in South Pacific - and their first action shows some promise:
