The Germans planned to use smoke-laying a/C during the eventual landings of Operation Sea Lion

Aahh, the rumours... Too bad the Germans didn't believe in them...[;)]... Smoke-laying from planes,
however, actually worked. From dedicated R-boats, too.

My neighbour from a few years ago actually participated in this operation as part of the 2/4th Australian Field Regiment.

He told me that they weren't concerned about the enemy but were deathly afraid of landing in a crocodile infested swamp.... [X(]

Pre-war doctrine called for pretty much everything that could lay smoke to do so to aid the battle fleet in blinding the enemy or screening a damaged battle fleet and allowing it to withdraw. DD's and bigger ships would simple inject black oil to cause "black smoke " from the funnels. PT boats, small craft (like TB's) and of course aircraft could lay smoke down by carrying smoke makers . PT boats had a large bottle near their sterns to generate smoke and aid in there escape after a torpedo attack.
