A new hero emerges for Japan in the battle. 4 fighters from the 24th Sentai became separated from the main sweep. They came in alone against 25 allied fighters. All 4 Japanese fighters were badly damaged, one was shot down, and two crashed on landing. The lone survivor of the detachment, however, was credited with 3 allied fighter kills. He dove on one P-40E and destroyed it, was engaged by another allied fighter, which he damaged (and was later reported to have crashed), and then engaged and damaged a 3rd allied fighter (which is also reported to have crashed). He now has 4 kills and is one short of being the first ace of the IJA. We will report his name in tomorrow's news (because I forgot to write it down).

Congratulations on the great achievement at Port Moresby;

the circumstance that Bobo could not even have reinforced the location is telling about the availability of his land forces currently (only);

to me this is a sign of big crisis; although I'm not learned or informed about the Allied OOB at this stage of the war, I'm surprised...

He certainly has some reinforcements available. For example, I just spotted a large troop transport group near Suva returning to Pearl or the West coast empty: large enough to have been carrying a U.S. division.

He sent some small 1 VP AKLs up on 2 occasions to resupply. Only 1 AKL managed to get through the Netties from Rabaul. The Akagi-Kaga group has been lurking around the Solomon chain, just out of his search arcs for 2 weeks, and he suspected that it was there, probably from the detection levels on his submarines. I was waiting to rush it in if he moved a CV or transport group up to Moresby. He decided to avoid a potential CV engagement at this point and wait for a better moment, possibly. I do have 81 Zeros on Rabaul, some of which were flying some LRCAP over my CVs when they approached Moresby, so even though only 4 fleet CVs are present, he may have better opportunities in the future.

BTW, the 81 Zeros are from a group of 45, a group of 27, and a detachment of 9... not some bizarre resized air-group from the Akagi. I don't make absurd-sized air groups.

Current state of the war.

Sumatra-Borneo

The allies continue to hold out at Padang though the units there are cut off. A few small resupply ships have kept the allied position there intact. The north of Sumatra remains in allied hands. A British base force remains at Kudat on Borneo and the remnants of the Dutch garrison at Tarakan are holed up in the swamp base southeast of Tarakan. Two small bases on the west coast of Borneo remain in allied hands and some inconsquential Dutch fragments are probably near those two bases.

Phillipines

2 allied units remain on Luzon and possibly one base force hiding in the jungle on Mindanao. Otherwise the entire island chain, minus a few independent islands that have yet to auto-convert, is in Japanese hands.

Java

The eastern coast is in Japanese hands up to Soerabaja and Batavia. Allied redoubts remain at Boendang, Batavia, and Soerabaja. The real ground fighting is just beginning. Japan has captured one good airfield in the north and is moving on Madioen in the south. Denpasar, Palembang, Oosthaven, and Bandjemasin are serving as the primary Japanese airfields for the moment.

Southeastern DEI

Ambon and Kendari are in Japanese hands. The Japanese landed an SNLF and a construction battalion at Boela. The small bases of the southernmost DEI remain in allied hands, and the allies have garrisoned Koepang heavily it appears.

Malaysia

All but Singapore is in Japanese hands. The resistance at Singapore is weakening with each day and each heavy artillery bombardment. Allied AV there is now below 400.

Burma-Thailand

A mostly quiet theater with ocassional allied night-bombing to hamper airfield expansion.

China

A mostly quiet theater marked only by the drive across the Gobi desert.

SoPAC

Moresby is in Japanese hands, along with Milne Bay, Tulagi, Buna, Shortlands, Gasmata, Lae, Finschafen, and Woodlark. Two small allied units remain near Lae, and the remants of the Rabaul garrison are moving to the dot bases on the west of the island. Otherwise the Solomon Sea is under Japanese control.

Yesterday, Bob blundered and left a group of Catalinas at a dot base that auto-converted to Japanese control. The squad was destroyed: an important safety tip for all those dot-base players. Be careful of auto-conversions. Air-groups on bases that auto-convert are not given a roll to escape, and I am not sure that ships there are allowed to escape either. So, if you have an AV, an AK, and float planes at a dot base... well... do not say that you have not been warned. I do not think that this is intended, and is a bug that should be fixed (along with the destruction of industry at bases that auto-convert).

Today I blundered. I had sent a reinforcement convoy to Wake a week ago from Honshu. I did not check on their progress the last two days, and they arrived in the PM phase on March 1. One SNLF partially landed and attacked without any support. It was mostly destroyed. Another cautionary tale to remind you to keep a close eye on all of your TFs... lol. I did not think that this TF was going to arrive today.

Zeros followed up the Oscar fighter sweep from yesterday over Soerabaja. The allied planes are fighting well. Note the layered CAP approach that Bob is using with the more manuevable Hawks and Demons below the P-40Es. It has been pretty effective. We traded 11 Oscars for 16 allied fighters yesterday, and 3 Zeros for 5 allied fighters today, more or less. The Oscar pilots are not my best, but they are not bad... exp. 65-70, air 65-70... all defense 70 or better. The Zero pilots are top notch. Exp. 75-80, Air 75-80, defense 70-80.

He is getting the most from his P-40s. I do not mind the Oscars, but as I have mentioned before, using Oscar as an air superiority fighter is tricky, because they do not get many kills against armored allied fighters. I much prefer Tojos and Tonies as air superiority fighters. The armored Oscar, however, makes for a versatile plane that can handle some lesser fighter duties and works very well as a low-altitude bomber. The armor allows it to survive the ground fire that would destroy the earlier model Oscars. The Oscar IIa is almost useless in Stock in my opinion, and I actually prefer the Ic to the IIa for its better climb and manueverability.

Today, I managed to get it correct on Wake. A naval bombardment by Mutsu and Nagato is followed up by an attack by the 2 remaining SNLFs, and the base finally falls after taking quite a toll on Japanese SNLFs.

My timetable was to take Singapore on February 28th. It fell on March 3rd. I projected Bataan for Jan. 15th. 3 weeks to reorganize the units, and 3 weeks to redeploy. That was a pretty good projection. If only all of my plans could fall into place so precisely. Now if all of Java falls by March 31st, I will have completed my timetable for the DEI as precisely as is possible.

On Java, Robert sidesteps a fighter sweep over Soerabaja, correctly predicting that I would sweep but not bomb today. He is predicting my actions with growing regularity. But I am still capable of a few surprises. I slipped a squadron of Oscars into Semarang and had them flying LRCAP. They caught some bombers.

Robert correctly predicted that I would try to follow up the sweeps by attacking the airfield. He left his cap on station, and they performed admirably, shrugging off Japanese escorts and getting after the bombers. I am beginning to suspect that these are AVG pilots.

Probably because of heavy rain? and dispersed escorting formations? But shouldn't it have affected the defenders alike - in RL at least?
