Ug! Good example of what happens when amateurs do that sort of thing. Idiots broke her back, then scoured her with high pressure hoses. Walking all over the mother fucker's wings. Ouch!

No kidding. I kept thinking as they were pulling her up, "You've got to get some more support or you'll..." And then mysteriously her back was broken. Dip****s.

Well you learn something new everyday. The P-40 was a jet aircraft. Well I never knew that......

At least they got the model right. Could have been a Yuck-7 or else.

In the early seventies, the Nederlanders were draining the Zuider Zee and creating the Eisel Meer after closing of the top.
In draining parts of it, many allied aircraft were exposed and Military Police units from NATO were involved in protecting those sites while lost aircrews were being recovered.
To the best of my knowledge, none of those planes were salvaged, and there were many.

I'm sure most of us remember the Brewster Buffalo which was salvaged a few years back in Finland?

I seem to recall something about the water of the Black Sea not being as corrosive as other bodies of salt water. Don't recall why.

The Black Sea is very deep and cold. Apparently it was originally a large glacial lake with a surface level much lower than the Mediterranean. Then, because of retreating glaciers or erosion of the land barrier at the Bosporus, the Med broke through and poured its water into the Black Sea, raising the level several hundred feet. Some think this may be the origin of the Biblical Flood story.

There is archaeological evidence of ancient buildings several hundred feet down from the current surface level. They are scattered all along the Black Sea perimeter, as towns would be along a major body of water. Then there is a gap with no structures to the current surface level.

It's the temperature. Saltwater corrosion happens faster in warm water, but even at that I'm surprised at how anything is left. The Do-17 pulled out of the English Channel a couple of years back was in worst shape.

Most cultures have some sort of flood story. At the end of the last ice age most humans probably lived at low altitude as they do today. Most settlements were flooded as the oceans rose about 300 feet (100 m) in a fairly short time period. It was dramatic in some places like the Mediterranean where the straits of Gibraltar allowed the Atlantic in. Evidence has been found off Japan, India, and in the Black Sea of ancient cities about 300 ft down below current sea level.
