Correct and the game has slowed down a lot due to Brian having a RL

Indeed. Not really compatible with being a true gamer, but these days we must celebrate diversity in the Wite community.

Back to the game

No action to see once more so here are a couple of high level pics.

Image

Hatched area shows roughly the area conquered in my northern O.What can't be seen is about a Front's worth of R casualties

The Brianites have advanced a few hexes (not hex rows) in the last few turns but he hasn't tried to do a proper O to take ground.

units destroyed

Image

Most of the axis withdrawal units are Italians and a few Jerries, but I also I have far more construction units than I need. In particular, I do not need 5 fully-manned FBDs

One can't help but wonder at what stage Russia would collapse. Is this that state or would they always fight to the bitter end?
Considering the prolonged fight of the "whites" in the civil war I wonder if that isn't just the case.

The main question then being when the organised state collapses into splintered and isolated action. I would probably say losing a front at this stage would lead to a coup (if it didn't happen earlier). And life after stalin might produce a situation like WWI Russia after the Tsar.

Extremely interesting AAR and I am surprised of the amount of hurt the Russians can soak up and still be able to have localized parity.

Thank you for your kind words. The answer to the question 'when and how would the USSR disintegrate?' is one of the great known unknowns - at least until the very different circumstances of some 50 years later.

The reasons for localised parity are first and foremost date-based national morale changes, and secondly free unit returns. Increased numbers of R artillery pieces do a lot to drive up axis casualties in combat as the game goes on.

I have done a bit of Pelton-style hex counting. I believe there are 74 non-mud turns before the game ends. The nearest Brianite troops are 100 hexes from Berlin. They were a bit closer before my northern offensive.

Thoughts on the northern O. It started on T92 and lasted for 17 weeks. During that time Brianite losses in the area were 17 xxx, 18 xx (many were broken-down xxx) 6 x and 3 SUs: somewhat over a full-strength Front. Many of the G losses incurred were replace by the swarms of HIWIs coming out of the POW camps. The Red Air Force also got quite a good kicking.

Despite these losses, the Russian OOB only fell by about 70K over this period, but the G OOB increased by the same amount so by the end the R OOB of 5.65M was only just over 25% bigger than G's of 4.38M, and the Brianites are further away than ever from Berlin.

I'm happy that this was the right O to have made. Charging into the empty wastes in the east would not have had the same results, not least because R mobile forces become much more effective in '43, and effective flank protection would not have been feasible. I think the game is pretty-much stalemated at the moment. I certainly don't intend to bash the Wehrmacht against a brick wall for no strategic gain, and will adopt Manstein's strategy of smacking the enemy if they expose themselves coming after me. It is now early August but I can't see Brian being able to mount more than nuisance attacks taking a little ground here and there, mainly in the unimportant east, before the winter. He has quite a few tank and cavalry xxx, but I've only seen 1 mech xxx and not a single artillery xx or x. If he goes on the offensive, his manpower losses will climb and his truck position will worsen - especially if I can bash his tank units.

I will offer Brian the chance to end it here. However, if he wants to play on it would be unacceptable bad manners for me to quit after he's had to put up with being kicked around for just over 2 years - which is only the first half of the game. It would be interesting to see how many VPs I can hang onto.

Fifty Shades of WiTE?

Brian wants to carry on until the end, and then to play Hardluckyetagain. He obviously has been influenced/inspired by a recent (in)famous book and film
