I like the concept but it seems a little slow to keep up with a warfighting CSG. Also what would it's ASW capability be beyond embarked a/c? While a CG is fully capable of spherical self defense this design seems to be an HVT requiring escorts for defense.

Me too, using the design of LPD hull as the next-gen missile cruiser is quite sounding.

I think the 20+ knots is aimed for Marine fleet rather than Navy's. To fully seperate their duties of two fleets, a capable missile warship without sacrificing an amphibious combat readiness is a must. Hence to trade speed with room for tilt-rotor aircrafts.

Due to the MTCR classify armed UAV as a missile, and the fear of technology leak from selling US drones to Middle Eastern countries to fight off ISIS. The sale was stranded under Obama-era presidency. Until now, 22 congressmen demand Trump to allow and quickly sell MQ-9 to these countries, to competite the success of Chinese UAVs:

Fincantieri Delivers Second General Purpose FREMM Frigate Rizzo to the Italian Navy
Image
“Rizzo” is the sixth unit built by Fincantieri including the combat system, the second in multipurpose configuration after the “Carlo Bergamini”, delivered to the Italian Navy in 2012. 144 meters long and with a displacement at full load of approximately 6,700 tons, the FREMM frigates represent technological excellence: designed to reach a maximum speed of 27 knots and to provide accommodation for 200 people (crew and staff), these vessels are able to always guarantee a high degree of flexibility and to operate in a wide range of scenarios and tactical situations.

The Chinese carrier EMC testing mockup in Wuhan has been further modified. It's island now resembles the Ford-class CVN, pressumably featuring dual band radar arrays.
It is assumed that the upcoming Type 002 conventional CATOBAR carrier is being simulated by this mockup, just as past Chinese carriers.

In other news, the Type 001A in Dalian is ready to launch with the painting almost completed.

Another alarmist journalism: a claim about China attempted to hack South Korean radars and defense systems under retaliatory of THAAD deployment. It's no stranger to ARS readers because many technology news are usually involved with politics, but ARS is a successful Obama-era media as readers almost fully agreed that China is the biggest enemy of the entire Korean Missile Crisis situation:

https://arstechnica.com/security/2017/0 ... se-efforts

Even ARS does applauded China's success of TZ-1 cargo launched by CZ-7 rocket for resupply TG-2 station, the comment section was gone toxic as discussion steered into 'evil dictatorship's espionage effort'.

----------

A non-official vote has been raised for naming a near-complete Chinese Type 001A aircraft carrier on china.com. Only for few days, a great majority of Chinese netizens voted "Taiwan" rather than rumored official name "Shandong", suggesting China should follow South Korean and Vietnam's naming to rebuke geopolitical disputes/conflicts.

In contrast however, the least amount of voters chose "Hong Kong" for new carrier name, signaling disfavors against Hong Konger's anti-sovereignty identity:

Wasn't that the same story that went on with the descriptions of US sailors quitting and outright deserting their posts when the ship eventually made it into neares friendly port?

In Details : French Navy Aircraft Carrier Charles de Gaulle Mid-Life Refit
The French Navy (Marine Nationale) sole aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is in dry dock since February 2017 for its mid-life refit following 15 years of operational deployments during which it was involved in most of the international conflicts in which France took part (Afghanistan, Libya, Levant) and in particular three times since January 2015. This major overhaul focuses on three main elements: The combat management system of the vessel, the carrier air wing facilities and the ship management systems.
