CVL Hosho

Post by Chris21wen »

No biggy

Why is the Hosho shown as a CVE in the game when all the references I have seen call it a CVL?

In size and capacity it was closer to a CVE than a CVL.

Still British Hermes is a CVL, not a CVE.

The Hermes was a bit larger, larger displacement, a little more aircraft capacity, and had some armor which the Hosho almost completely lacked. It may have been the unarmored nature of the Hosho that got it classified as a CVE.

Despite the heavy losses at Midway that put Japan on a crash carrier conversion and construction program the Hosho was not used as a fleet carrier after Midway. It was assigned to training duties because it was too small and cramped to operate modern aircraft.

In any case the designations in the game are USN designations. The ship types are assigned as best as possible, but they are mapping one country's designations onto another.

As per wikipedia (Which sometmes is a hit-or-miss):

"On 12 August 1939 Hôshô was deemed useful as a training carrier and, in critical battles, as a platform for A4N1 (Type 95) fighters and B4Y1 (Type 96) torpedo bombers, for as long as those planes remained serviceable. A later investigation determined on 23 December 1940 that she could not operate the latest aircraft types like the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, the Aichi D3A "Val", or the Nakajima B5N "Kate" in combat.[30] Also, the small size of the carrier's airgroup limited the ship's potential value to the fleet in any future conflicts."

in game terms, you can put the latest planes on it and make it nice CVL, but IRL it was really not even adequate as a CVE

I put 22 Jeans on Hosho ( later a few Zero ( 3 ) just in case with the best ASW pilots possible and go sub hunting - in my game she was sunk in Oct 44 but probably accounted for 20 allied subs at least.

[:D]A little different. All fighters early on, Jeans go to land to train ASW, and later she will lead a hunter/killer group.[:D]

My CVEs are already sunk - but I wonder what are the main differences in game terms from CVL-CVE, yup guess in the manual. I know CVE will fly not half CAP if in a base hex (CV/CVL are halfed)
- but guess CVEs do also get a malus for strikes/coordination and slower take off cycles?

Are these confirmed sinkings ? Cause Allied subs have 9 lives.... at least 50-60% which are reported by your guys will get an "unsunk" message later in the OPS report [:D] At least in my game...

I wonder what are the main differences in game terms from CVL-CVE,

CVE's are typically slower the CVL's....GP

CVEs can go in a base hex and still do full operations (CVs can only do 50%). I think the CVEs might need to be in a CVE Escort TF to do the full operations, but I am not sure.

slower, less maneuverable, carried fewer (and smaller/ less advanced) planes, less well armed and armored.

as you already noticed, not the most survivable ship you can bring to a fight
