Todd informed me that Suva is the first target selected by the US on their trek to Tokyo. As can be seen from the reports above there is suddenly a lot of recon activity over the base. We also have a bunch of battleships reported as incoming. Time for a wry smile when I read Todd’s missive that Suva was the place. Thing is I abandoned Suva months ago. Todd is about to capture the base without a contest. I figured that this place is way too far away to properly defend. For that matter, Noumea and Luganville have also been abandoned. The first line of Japanese defence on this vector will commence at Guadalcanal. I do hope that Todd has a lot of units prepped for Suva and Noumea and that he doesn’t have too much ready to go yet for more northerly locations. Hopefully this will buy me some time to reposition KB after the Petropavlovsk Operation.

A long hoped for victory. Nothing, of course, can ever be certain in taking on the bear (and I am certainly a novice here). My view has been that if I’m going to commit to it then Petropavlovsk will be my anchor. Leaving it in Russian (read US reinforced hands) is tantamount to inviting the northern campaign by the Americans to kick off in earnest. The prospect of securing this base filled me full of uncertainty. Just how difficult would it be to seize. Worst still was the prospect of the damage which those CD guns would inflict. I knew that my transports would be easy prey and that the job of the escorts would be to cover the troops ships as best they could. My goal was to keep my warship loses as low as possible whilst accepting that there would be transport loses (hopefully acceptable).

So, the base is now mine and what of the bill?

2 (old) light cruisers. (the only 2 warships lost so more than happy)
9 xAK. (getting high but could have been far worse)
2 xAP. (considering I used a lot, which is a no no, I think that only 2 lost is a good return)
6 xAKL (a good result for ships which burn up in no time with CD guns hammering them)

A total of 188 VP over the course of a week. Total sunk ships now number at 102 for the war.

As for damaged ships, all but a couple of merchants have made it to Paramushiro and should be repaired in time if I keep them out of the sights of submarines.

The tally of damaged ships is

3 xAK
1 APD
4 DD
2 CL
1 BB

Finally, to really balance things up there is the bonus of killing a US TF which was intent of messing with my invasion TF.

Here is what I believe the KB managed to sink.

10 DD
2 CL
3 CA
3 CVE

Against that we lost a handful of aircraft and SS S-1 which kicked the show off by finding the CVE force in the first place.

All of the ground units deployed for this operation are in great shape. I can now free up the two divisions here. 56th Division will immediately prep for Alexandrovsk whilst 23rd Division will head to the south Pacific to bolster the defences down there. Coming back to the theme of Petropavlovsk being my anchor; from here my next objective is subduing the land fort at 127,42 near Shikuka and then moving on Alexandrovsk. The eventual objective here is to capture Okha. Great bases to launch another sea borne assault on one of the mainland Russian bases; probably Sovetskaya Gavan so I can move on Khabarovsk. I have the confidence now to do it but I am getting ahead of myself here. Somewhere amongst all of this I have an eye on Magadan too. Todd has not made a move to send US bombers to Russia via staging bases but I would like to remove bases that are inviting to do so. I know he can probably send the big bombers all the way across the map from Alaska but Magadan is open for consideration if all continues to prosper in the Russian adventure.

Guns lost 21 (0 destroyed, 21 disabled)
Vehicles lost 6 (1 destroyed, 5 disabled)

So here we have it. The Americans finally strike. Masses of disablements so I’m wondering if Todd has the 1st Marines prepped for somewhere else and he threw them onto Suva knowing that KB is a long way away. Hopefully they will take at least a good week or more to restore those disabled squads.

The US forces arrayed for Suva become apparent. I wonder what would have occurred if I have of stacked the place with troops and supply as well as building up the forts. I think it would have been a hard nut to crack but it can so easily be by passed. I think I have best used it as a temporary speed bump.

Limited Gain

Post by SierraJuliet »

A couple of days ago Todd mentioned that the Petropavlovsk Operation was one which was of limited gain only and that it also gave him the opening he had been looking for to launch the beginning of the US response. I outlined some thinking, which I rarely do in our PBEM, and thought it useful to share it here with you. Pleased to hear of thoughts regarding the importance, or not, of Petro once a Russian show has been ignited.

Well the fact that an Allied response was coming is no secret. Just when of course has been. I suspect that people reading my AAR are waiting to see just how I go in responding now that we are no longer playing the early game. Probably still well matched in naval terms for the time being should we cross swords. I've had a dream run and now it is time to see how difficult a time I can make to your timetable.

As for Petropavlovsk. Yes it is a limited gain if we think purely in terms of where to move forward to from here. I'm not thinking that way. I think that any Japanese player embroiled with the Soviets has to at least neurtralize the threat posed by this base. Preferably seize it and deny it to Aliies for as long as we can. It is simply too good a base too close to HI for it to remain in Allied hands. Too big a thorn in my side I think. Exposing the position of KB to cover the landings was necessary. As it turned out well justified too once your CVEs turned up on the scene.

Todd updates me about the political situation in the western world.

India continues to be a major thorn in Winnie's posterior. When FDR is updated about the situation in the SWPAC he smiles and says that it needs to be expanded upon across the entire PTO.

I send him this little snippet of a meeting at the Palace. (The fleet is not quite rested but within a few days the carriers will be ready to sail again. They deserve a small break back in home waters)

Imperial Palace, Tokyo.

Grand Admiral Yamamoto finishes his appraisal of fleet preparedness to the Emperor.

"The fleet is rested and re provisioned after Admiral Yamaguchi's victory and the success at Petropavlovsk. Now that the Americans have nibbled at the bait that was Suva our fleet stands ready to deal the final blow to the American Fleet. Wherever and whenever they show themselves."

The Emperor smiles

Todd responds.

A final blow to end the war! King asked Nimitz recently about the prospect of an American victory in a major engagement. The answer wasn't exactly what he hoped for.

23rd Tank Regiment isolated with no supply! Interesting. This is the second tank regiment to have this happen in the fighing near Shilka. Time to disengage and get those disabled tanks back up to speed. The other tank regiment has been restored and is on the way to re-join the fray. The Russians also seem to have some issues with their units as I noted a couple with 0 AV. I’ve posted the relative strengths at the end of the combat round below.
