Extending control of hexes inter-turn

Extending control of hexes inter-turn

Frequently playing as Soviets and less so as Axis, I see Axis mobile formations often extending their controlled hexes far beyond where they came to rest at the end of their turn - sometimes as far as 10 hexes. I don't see this as often when I play the Axis side.

Where is the algorithm for this covered?

There is no algorithm like this. Only encercled hex without ennemy units are automaticaly converted.

Maybe in the same turn the axis mobile formation painted some hex, then returned back to safety ?

To add to Stelteck which is correct.

What most likely happens during the axis turn is that the axis units move 10 hexes forward and assuming these hexes arent in Russian ZoC. They then converts the hexes and ZoC hexes if divisionale sized units to their control. The units then use their remaining of the MP to move back 5 hexes and will rest at the end of the turn 5 hexes from the most advanced it was during the axis turn. Non the less, as these hexes was converted during the axis turn and if not in the ZoC of a SU unit during the SU turns pre phase will remain axis controlled during the pre phase of the russian turn.
