Summary of Operations 01/12/45

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Buna base – 248K supply and 17K fuel on hand (unchanged).

Current status of Milne Bay base – 671K supply and 110K fuel on hand.

Current status of Port Moresby base – 1.24 million supply and 127K fuel on hand (unchanged).

Current status of Terapo base – 217K supply and 11K fuel on hand.

Summary of this game turn’s reported aircraft losses over all locations in SW Pacific theatre operations area including Rabaul.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 34 Ki-84 Frank (13 air-to-air, 18 on the ground, 3 ops)
• 12 Ki-61 Tony (9 air-to-air, 2 on the ground, 1 ops)
• 2 Ki-45 Nick (both on the ground)
• 4 Ki-44 Tojo (all air-to-air)
• 6 Ki-43 Oscar (all on the ground)
• 32 N1K1-J George (16 air-to-air, 16 on the ground)
• 40 N1K2-J George (14 air-to-air, 20 on the ground, 6 ops)
• 6 J2M3 Jack (1 air-to-air, 5 on the ground)
• 3 A6M2 Zero (1 air-to-air, 1 on the ground, 1 ops)

Allied planes reported destroyed
• 13 P-51D Mustang (10 air-to-air, 3 ops)
• 11 P-47D Thunderbolt (8 air-to-air, 3 ops)
• 5 P-39D Airacobra (3 flak, 2 ops)
• 3 A-20G Havoc (1 flak, 2 ops)

A short-term shortage of replacement pool USAAF first-line fighter planes is anticipated to restrict offensive fighter sweep operations, particularly squadrons now operating P-47D Thunderbolt types. This measure is necessary to limit losses of planes in combat operations to preserve full TOE aircraft strength in fighter squadrons currently operating at front-line bases. The shortage of replacement pool planes not expected to affect defensive fighter (CAP) operations provided replacement planes are still available in the pools to maintain TOE aircraft strength in all units.

This situation results from production of P-47D25 Thunderbolts discontinued in 6/44 with no significant production of first-line USAAF planes (P-47D & P-51 variants) from the end of 6/44 until the start of P-51D Mustang production at the beginning of 11/44. Some P-47D Thunderbolt fighter squadrons are now upgrading to P-51D Mustangs, although numbers of available P-51D replacement planes will need to be conserved and monitored with the increased number of fighter squadrons operating P-51D Mustangs. Production of P-47H Thunderbolt planes is scheduled to start on 3/01/45 and should eliminate the situation by the end of 3/45 when remaining P-47D fighter squadrons can begin upgrade in significant numbers to P-47H planes. At this time it’s a manageable though somewhat delicate balancing act.

Summary of Operations 01/12/45 (continued)

Australia: Transport convoy WX-43 (27 ships) arrives from mainland US. Cargo aboard the convoy includes 11 air units (7 USAAF B-29 Superfort squadrons, one USAAF 2E bomber squadron, two US Marine VMF squadrons, one USN patrol squadron), 115K supply and 76K fuel. A detachment of convoy WX-43 (WX-43A) with 12-13 transport ships carrying the B-29 Superfort squadrons is being formed to forward these seven air units plus three additional squadrons at Melbourne awaiting transfer from SW Pacific theatre to India. Plans just being started to form a strategic bombing force based in India under 14th USAAF HQ to begin bombing operations “over the hump” against industrial targets in China (14 USAAF HQ currently a training command at Capetown). As long as strategic bombing of the Japanese Home Islands remains not feasible, attacking industry in China from bases in India is appearing as the quickest, fastest opportunity to implement any significant strategic bombing offensive. The ten B-29 squadrons being transferred from Australia to be joined with 6 additional B-29 squadrons in transit from Eastern US to India via the EX convoy system.

Straits of Malacca: British patrol sub (SS Sirdar) hit and sunk in attack by Ki-49 Helen air patrol in northern area of the straits SE of Sabang (hex location 46, 71).

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 114 aircraft (94 fighters, 18 bombers), no Jap TF, manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 72(129), light industry 9(32), 18 Jap LCU.

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – 214 aircraft (194 fighters, 9 bombers), oil production 202(99), refinery 96(5), 27 Jap LCU.
