1.10 crash

Post by pompack »

Just opened game under steam, got beta update for 1.10. Loaded current PBEM turn and started recon of front as Soviets. Game CTD. Started again, did recon again and got CTD on third recon flight. Started again, started recon from South instead of North and got CTD on fifth flight. Note that none of the crashes occurred while trying to recon the same area.

Obviously game is unplayable but I can get save if needed

UPDATE: 1. Reloaded game and 1.10 patch, same problem, no change
2. Loaded 2nd instance of game locally (no Steam) and patched to 1.09. No problem with 22 recon flights covering entire front

I'm able to do many recon flights, even to the same hex. AI recon also works.

I just did 60 recon mission at the start of my turn with no issue. (Steam version 1.10.00, opening a turn from 1.09.01).

It looks like something strange.

No CTD here as Axis vs. SU doing recon AI.

Please let Steam verify game files integrity. In Game options please disable sound/music and restart game to test.

The crash happens because of lack of safeguards when operating with a maximum of possible pilots (32 000). Even if I will add those safeguards in the place it crashes in your case, there may be many more such places. It's better not to exceed 18-19 000 planes as the Soviets. The data in your game is now corrupt, but I will try to fix it, and upload fixed save.

I think we had this issue before. The game is not made to handle well reaching the maximum limit of 32k planes and/or pilots. This causes memory corruption and thus crashes further down the line.

So the fix should be to go back one turn and delete some air units?

Yes, this should help as this will free up some slots. I have seen many units without pilots, so I think you need to disband at least 50 groups.

Thank you, I'll go back one turn, do that, let my opponent process the turn then I will install the patch and see what happens

Thank you again

If anyhow possible we should disable building of new air units if 15k soviet aircraft/pilots are in use. This should rise to 20k once soviet air uniits reach their maximum permitted size by 12/43.
For ongoing games we need force-disbanding of the lowest ((exp+morale)/2) units if soviet air units exceed 25k Aircraft/pilots

Maybe just add a warning log each turn in the combat report if there is a high number of pilots could do the trick for a beginning.
Like :
***** WARNING : Numbers of active pilots exceed 18K, it may cause crash and instability. Please disband some air units**************

I thought about limiting air groups to 600. I think this is the limit for AI.
