Off to see the lizard.....

Post by AW1Steve »

This will be a Strategy AAR in anticipation of someday engaging in a PBEM with Geoff the Gorn. He started preparing just before Christmas 2016. I'm in hopes of actually starting in sometime prior to Christmas of 2017 , or my death from old age. [:(] Since I will be soliciting advice on strategy and other facets of game play , I'm going to ask Geoff to cease reading this thread now , as we discussed before. Thank you gentle Gorn. [:D]

Well, this should be something to behold. Paired AARs about a rumored game that may or may not ever get underway.

Good luck, Steve, should the eventuality arise in which the game does proceed, despite Geoff's myriad misadventures and inability to commit to anything except obtuse ventures into the surreal.

Have any of the rest of you seen a AAR that he supposedly did more than 2 years ago? I've not been able to find it. Or has anyone here actually played him? At this point I'm just trying to figure out the sort of player he is , how aggressive he is , etc. More character stuff than anything else. Of course I KNOW he's a character. [:D] I'm just curious what kind.

The aspect of this game that I dearly love more than any other is the strategy and tactics involved. I could easily spend an entire day (over beer and other imbibments) over nothing but various writers of the ilk, be they Clausewitz, Jomini , Mahan, Corbert, Mitchell, Doughet , Etc, etc. And how to apply them to this game. And I'm always fascinated by the strategies and concepts that some of the members of this forum come up with. So I really hope some of you will join me here and chew the fat , and hopefully let me pick your collective brains. Thanks. [&o][:)]

I suspect that this is an evil plan to delay so long, that by the time he starts you will have forgotten how to play [:D]

Seriously though, I hope it does get underway as it should be fun. Here's hoping.

No , actually I'm positive he's not. The irony is my first few PBEM's were with people in lands far away. My 1st mentor was Sprior in the UK. This guy's about 26 miles away! [:D]

I'm thinking of doing a modified "Sir Robin". Of course that depends on what he'll let me get away with. By that I mean , pull all my "battleworthy" ships back where they can be regrouped and in the case of DD's upgraded to a decent ASW rating. Going out with a Task force where the average escort is rated a "2" scares the devil out of me. Troops and planes pretty much will withdraw only locally to form larger battle groups. Ships will pull back out of air range to decent ports for up grades. "Colonial powers" ships that can't be upgraded will be pretty much be left in place.

Then I think you better do this thread in symbols, because language changes too fast: if you use a contemporary language then no one will be able to read this thread when it becomes relevant!

I did play him(that's probably the 2 years old AAR). We ended in March/April 42 as I did not have enough time to play daily(he is reliable, I am not [:D]).

What I can remember from our game.
- he seemed to me quite aggressive, if I recall few unescorted or poorly escorted landings were sunk
- using of paras to cut of retreat to Singers
- splitting KB to hunt down Force Z
- early Palembang invasion

11 pages combined in the AAR section, and without having run a turn. I wonder what the record is? [:D][:D]

Thank you! It was VERY helpful, and interesting. Obviously I need to really study it , as he's apparently a aggressive little dinosaur. [:(][:(]

I noticed that tendency. He also seems to have a bad habit of "leaving lots of castles behind his lines". Not a good habit. It often bites you in the ass. [:)][:)]

Yes he seems really hung up on using Glenns for scouting , outside of CAP range. Good idea. Especially in a line with non aircraft capable boats. And he doesn't use them for RECON of bases , less the CAP get them. So it seems like ASW will be a major priority right off the bat. As early allies , I see me as only having 3 groups of decent Hunter killer component DD's. Obviously the new Brit DD's. The Dutch new DD's . And Clemson class converted DD's ( to APD's). Each of those ships have "6" ASW ratings. As I don't have very many , and am short on MPA aircraft , I'm guessing I'll need to concentrate them into one or two areas, saturate it with MPA aircraft , and "sanitize" area , by area. Also any major movements of ships will have to have a "trail breaking" vanguard of lesser capable ASW type ships , 2 or 3 hexes (or maybe more) ahead of the main body. Once they "trip" over the sub , the main body can avoid it (or them).

Anybody got any other ideas? [&:]

In the first six months you will get lots of false Intel reports on IJ subs everywhere. To help winnow out the chaff, I ignore single listings in the Intel Report (oil slick, object below surface, etc.) unless there is an actual attack made on the target hex or a line in the Ops Report says a sub is detected in the same or adjacent hex.
