Origins 2016 - Scenario 1
It is time to try a larger scenario - this one is a medium size. I was a little overwhelmed when I first started looking at it, but as I go through the planning process it is starting to come together.
This is the first scenario that I've tried where the Soviet player has lots of Arty resources - it will be interesting to see how the Soviets use this awesome firepower. I'm not sure my forces will enjoy it.
Here is the look at the battlefield. There is lots of interesting obstacles and urban areas...

Soviet – Thoughts/Deductions
Most likely – Option 1
Least likely – Option 3
The Soviets have more Artillery than I have dealt with in past scenarios. This means:
1. I will have to dedicate some of my Arty resources to Counter Battery (CB) fire
2. I need to move my artillery resources more frequently – to avoid soviet CB missions
The Soviets have tons of AD weapons, I will have to do lots of Suppression of Enemy AD (SEAD) to give a chance to my choppers and air support.
Taking out the “right” bridges will slow down the soviet advance.
As usual, taking out HQ units is a good thing.

Another look at what I have
I start with the following Manoeuvre elements:
TF A
TF C
B company TF D
To support them initially:
M109 Regiment
Hawk SAM
Thoughts
I need to get some of my recce elements out front – as Iron Mike Golf states, I need to give them specific tasks to observe and confirm what I think the Soviets are doing.
I do not have any Infantry, making it hard to dig in and defend. So, I need to think about using the terrain to move into good engagement areas and then back off to the next one. There are some good areas to engagement the Soviets in the centre of the AO – the trade off will be getting forces there in time – the Soviets are very quick on the advance and I do not want to get caught halfway there…
The Soviets have Attack Helicopter (AH) support – I do not have lots of AD, so need to try and get a good AD umbrella – the HAWKs will help.
Sunrise is about 0526 – so around 2 hours into the scenario. This may give me time to get forces in place, also will help the Soviets.
Most of my Air Support leaves shortly after sunrise! It would be really nice to have my air support take out the Soviet HQs and Artillery.
The command cycles are similar in length right now – in the scenario description there is lots of talk of comms jamming – I need to keep my orders to a minimum where/when possible and move my HQs fairly frequently so that they do not get hit.
Taking out the Soviet HQs will help lengthen their command cycles – which will give me opportunities to exploit. (I like this aspect of the game, I wonder sometimes if the opposition (Soviet in this case) command cycles should be known…).
The Soviets have lots of AD units – I need to keep a watch on them as they could strip away my tanks very quickly.
Okay, so what do I need to do
Find the enemy
Figure out the enemy intentions and see if I can confirm which option they are following (or if they are trying something different). This means pushing recce forward to observe specific locations for Soviet movement and composition.
Fix the enemy
Use the natural obstacles and other obstacles (blown bridges, minefields) to get the Soviets into places where we can strike them. Look at blowing some more bridges and using FASCAM minefields to slow down and shape the Soviets. Use MLRS and M109s to place FASCAM minefields.
Strike
I have a fair bit of strike capability, use it to attack the Soviets throughout their depth. Do not only focus on their T-80s and BMPs. I need to attack their artillery and HQs. Use MLRS and air support to attack HQs, AD and Arty. Use AH and M1s to strike soviet tanks and BMPs, but try not to get stuck into to much close combat.

RE: Origins 2016 - Scenario 1
Decision
I like all the options, but am going to try the last option – the left hook.
I like the idea of attacking the depth of the Soviet formation. This is one of the first scenarios where I may have a large enough force to try something. I do not have any infantry, so I can not really dig in and defend. I need to have a mobile defence.
It is a gamble, but it should be fun… This is a game, and sometimes a gamble is worth it.
Thoughts after decision
I need to figure out which bridges to blow up – if any more.
I need to make sure that I use the MLRS to my advantage right up to the time they withdraw.
I need to look at how to provide M109 support to them – may not be possible.
I need to have a decision point for the launch, it would be great if I could time this right after a soviet command cycle and catch them completely off-guard.
I want to deploy recce from the two lead TFs forward to try and identify soviet option and force structure.
I like the idea of pushing some M109s forward early to strike at targets as early as possible – as recce finds them.
Need to look at building on the natural obstacles to slow down the Soviet advance and to turn it into EA 1.
I may need to phase the hook with EA 1 engagement for maximum effect.

The 2 recce sections from A Company that on the previous slide were deployed in depth are going to try to start out farther forward in the area of Bunzwagen if possible - they will move there once the recce sections in Weider are in place, if they have no Soviet forces in sight.

Damn! I was going through the fire support tab and noticed just three Mortar Pls, thought I should have four, one for each of the TF A and C companies - then realized that the second company in TF C is all M1s. I need to tweak the deployment plan for TF C - much less recce elements than I thought - more armour which is good....

RE: Origins 2016 - Scenario 1
As an FYI, there should be a PowerPoint mission briefing with each scenario going into mission details. The in-game scenario descriptions are basic info at best. Those should be used for these Origins scenarios for background info and what the mission parameters are. Looking good so far. Can't wait to see what happens.[8D]
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!
