So what would you propose? Certainly not destroying it?

That seems insane to me. Looking at it on a map I see a lot of open space around Stonehenge. Why not move the roads further away? It looks like it could be done. It would seem to me this will provoke some big protests.

moving the road is the cheaper and better option, under the ground while it lesson the impact, it's also add's a lot to the overall costs, and imo too much for how many use it or need it, or even want it

It seems like a really stupid and wasteful idea to me, but then I am not exactly the intended audience.

It should be left alone. Building a tunnel underneath Stonehenge might open up a portal to another dimension. [:D]

I used to be a regular traveller to the West Country. I have not been such for a few years now so what I say may be out of date. From London there are essentially two routes; M4-M5 (i.e. Motorway) or A303.

The A303 is the scenic, non-motorway route, and as such far more enjoyable to drive except in the summer, or the wrong time of day...or just about anytime really.

When I first used the road in the 80's there was very little dual carriageway. Over time that changed, making the A303 faster and less stressful. However the part that passed Stonehenge was always single carriageway.

If this tunnel is dual carriageway then I am 100% for it.

Joking apart, as an avid viewer of Time Team...

...The archaeological aspect should be considered of paramount importance. We don't know what technology might exist in the future which could reveal more secrets about Stonehenge. That technology will only be useful if there is something left to find. By building a tunnel under the place much of that archaeology will be destroyed. Stonehenge still has many secrets to be revealed as the whole landscape for miles around is one huge archaeologically-rich area and a ritual landscape or huge open air temple.

Heck, It will only cost about $300,000(US) per linear foot of tunnel that goes nowhere... except for site seeing..[:D]

A problem with this is that it now seems that what we think of as Stonehenge is part of a larger area with the henge as the centre. So, even those "open" areas might be of importance.
The real question ofc is what is the meaning of Stonehenge

You are exactly right..![;)] My expertise is in tunnel building of all types. When I see a price tag of 3 billion dollars on a project I can assuredly guarantee there will be cost over-runs that will bring that figure well above the projected estimate.

Operating - question - Is the tunnel system in Boston working? Or is it still the same bottlenecks?

How long will it take tourism to make up for that cost? But the Brits are a practical lot, and will make the correct decision, right?

From Stonehenge.co.uk - Excavations at the sight have revealed the charred remains of cremated humans. This leads scientists to believe that Stonehenge may have been built as a location for human sacrifice and religious events. Today, Stonehenge stands as proud as it did when it was built...

Nothing proud about human sacrifice.

I'm guessing yes, the answer lye's in building another tunnel under that tunnel[;)]

Let's put it this way: If the "Big Dig Project" had not been done the traffic congestion would have been far greater today. From the original projected cost of the inter-connected tunnel projects was estimated to be around $2 billion dollars, however it ended up somewhere near $14 billion dollars before it was all said and done. It certainly was a engineering marvel that took about a decade to complete...

Actually you are not too far off the mark... If the economy was a little stronger a proposal called the "North/South Rail Link Project" would tunnel under the existing Big Dig work from Boston's (RR) South Station to Boston's (RR) North Station, approximately a $5 Billion dollar project. Lack of funding is the main hurdle for this job to get the go ahead..

Boston will just have to sell more Boston baked beans to get that revenue.
