Marcus Incursion

Post by SierraJuliet »

My orders execution leaves something to be desired. The TF containing Kaga, Ryujo and Zuiho remains at Truk. Not an auspicious start to my attempt to spring a trap.

In the previous post Yamaguchi's TF can be seen in the lower left of the map. He is still hamstrung by the straggling second carrier TF. This screen shot shows the relative position of the ungrouped Japanese TFs.

Yamaguchi's despair

Post by SierraJuliet »

The Japanese carrier TFs are finally within cooee of each other. The distance to the withdrawing American fleet is alarming distant. Yamaguchi despairs. The possibility of bringing the Americans to heel is a fast receding dream

Yamaguchi's Decision

Post by SierraJuliet »

Yamaguchi decides. Flank speed to a position south east of Wake Island in the hope that the American carriers take their time. He knows it will come at some cost to the overall seaworthiness of his ships but the possibility of getting a strike at the American fleet has greater authority. Indeed; how could one face Yamamoto and explain a spurned opportunity to deliver a mighty blow. Anyway, it was not the way of Yamaguchi to meekly turn away. Few saw the order to increase speed relayed around the fleet but everyone could guess that an order had been broadcast and just what that order entailed. The once sedate pace necessitated by waiting for Kaga and her sisters was no more. Engines thundered in the bowels of each ship signalling that Yamaguchi was impatient to be somewhere and be there fast. The Imperial Japanese Navy raced into the gathering night. Raced because now the hunt was on and on in earnest.

For my part I felt good about making this move. The American Fleet had been sighted for many days and they had delivered strikes against Marcus and Wake. If they didn’t move fast, I felt that there was a good chance of getting close enough to see a battle take place. I was hopeful that the strikes and general wear and tear of being on guard would put the American aviators at something of a disadvantage should a battle take place.

That next morning Yamaguchi and the commanders of the KB waited. Waited for scout plane reports. Eventually reports were returned. American flat tops sighted. Sighted and in range. The Americans, though, were not the only ones sighted. American scout plans had also located KB. The afternoon was set for an exchange of blows not yet seen in this war across the Pacific.

Opps, he loses a few good men. I guess he will have to wait until the Essex class starts rolling out of the Democracy of Freedom.

Mop up the remnants

Post by SierraJuliet »

Thanks gentlemen. This battle did put a crimp in Todd's desire to tangle with me for a while. While it hurt at the time the loss, as you mention Bif1961, is not insurmountable. Todd has only lost 2 CV in this match so he has plenty in the cupboard. We are now into May '43 so I expect to see some Essex adventures soon. As for Yamaguchi and the battle of Wake Island... KB went hunting for the other carrier TF that we knew had been in company with the unfortunate Hornet/Wasp TF but our guess in the direction it would take was off and they escaped further attention.

There was one final chapter to this battle. Our cruisers pounced upon a few unfortunate destroyers.

6 June 1943

The Soviet response is not long in coming. I knew there would be a massive air force to deal with and I was not mistaken. By the end of the day the Japanese airfields at Mishan and Mutankiang are smoking ruins. All aircraft are ordered out with the expectation of these two front line bases being out of commission for a long time. I have just started the learning curve of how to tangle with the Russian giant.

I’m not quite sure how to deal with India as it will simply become too difficult to protect as the Allied power mounts… to some extent it might depend on what Todd does

India....Good Show!!!

Having to deal with the Russians may also precipitate a withdrawal from India?

I’m not quite sure how to deal with India as it will simply become too difficult to protect as the Allied power mounts… to some extent it might depend on what Todd does

India....Good Show!!!

Having to deal with the Russians may also precipitate a withdrawal from India?

Thanks MakeeLearn. India was spectacular and unexpected which explains why I never sealed the deal by taking the last 3 bastions. I have drawn down on some of the divisions there and re positioned in expectations of the next move by the Allies. I am very well aware of the impossibility of defending all this territory but want Todd to keep thinking I'm defending in a big way for as long as I can. The location/s of his thrust to begin the road towards Tokyo will help me decide what I should be doing in India.

Russia of course is a whole different problem.
