Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Is there a game option that allows you to switch from music to something like "battle sounds", such as like Operational Art of War?

The sound clips are .wav files. Most other matrix games are also .wav files. Check the length/duration of the sound file you wish to replace and put a new folder on your desktop to store the stock WITW sound files.
Then, rename the files you with to put in the WITW sound folder and copy/paste them. to that game folder.Make sure you are putting the sound of a tank moving to the same place as a tank moving and not the sound of messkits being beat on, (as an example.)

You may also find a lot of free sound files on the internet, for free, but you will need to rename them to .wav or they will not work when you play the game...and may cause your game to crash!

FWIW...I was very impressed with the sound files which came with WITW and do not feel I will be changing any of them in my game....'Jus' sayin'.....[:D]

Another option is to edit WITWSoundFXConfig.txt.

The list of all music files is at the very end.

Music($Music,$Ambience,$Generic,Fields_Of_Honour.wav,100)

Music($Music,$Ambience,$German,Hellwars.wav,100,1,1)
Music($Music,$Ambience,$German,WaW_Germany.wav,100,1,1)
Music($Music,$Ambience,$German,Thunder.wav,100,1,1)
Music($Music,$Ambience,$German,Divide_And_Conquer.wav,100,1,1)
Music($Music,$Ambience,$German,HuntThemDown.wav,100,1,1)
Music($Music,$Ambience,$German,Battle_Lines.wav,100,1,1)

Music($Music,$Ambience,$Soviet,Soldier_Salute.wav,100,1,1)
Music($Music,$Ambience,$Soviet,Remember_The_Soldier.wav,100,1,1)
Music($Music,$Ambience,$Soviet,Battle_Lines.wav,100,1,1)
Music($Music,$Ambience,$Soviet,Battle_Cry.wav,100,1,1)

As you might see 2by3 likes to keep the traditions - Confederates and Soviet Union are all present in WITW sound config :)
