OT: Russian Mig-29 fighter jet crashes in Mediterranean

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

First of all, it is good that they have confirmed a successful ejections, pilot is safe and sound.
Second... good to know that my KB is not the only one losing planes (at a high rate) due to "OP losses"

Would the US try to retrieve it? Mig-29s are not new, but having access to the latest navy model might be interesting, nevertheless
Besides, the Mediterranean is not too deep.

It depends upon where it fell, did it fall into deep water (there IS deep water in the Med) or within the national territorial waters of a country. If the latter, then the owning state would have jurisdiction, if in International Waters, then the Russians would have jurisdiction and I doubt they would cede such to the USA. If in deep water, there is a chance as the Russians may not have the equipment to go after it.

Yes, but the US have the equipment and the capability to make a stealth visit [;)] it doesn't need to take it all, maybe just the avionics

One needs to consider the potential political consequences before making a visit.

Yes, but relations are already bad.. and it is just a little espionage, not an act of war

Indeed.

However, if you want something from someone it doesn't help if you make him angry first. I am simply suggesting that it should be considered if you want something or not, before doing something that might make matters worse.

I doubt very much that anything from a MiG-29 would be worth such an undertaking. That plane is hardly state of the art and we've had a chance to 'get to know' them for many years (formerly East Germany and Poland had several IIRC) now. A "Firefox" this ain't.

The newest version of Mig 29K was tested by India Air force a few years back. I am sure that US Military already have reports from tests. Indians air force has decided to bay French fighter due problems with Mig-29K.
Summarizing, there is no need for such risky operation to get useless wreckage. And there is a lot of Mig-29 in hands of NATO members in case someone like play with it.
