Some pics of USS Alabama
Sorry didn't upload this pictures of USS Alabama earlier. Taken at Mobile, Alabama.
This is USS Alabama at the stern showing aft main gun 3x16"45cal.
This is forward of two main guns two of 3x16"/45cal guns. Possible on the forward upper deck or look out deck.
This is port side of USS Alabama showing her secondary 5"/38cal twin turrets.
This is USS Alabama, believe to be loading ammo for the 5"/38cal.

I understand there's a lot more of the ship open to tour than when I was in her in the '80s. Then you couldn't get into a barbette or the engine spaces.

Someone gave me these photos back in early 90's. Interesting photos of course and wish I had more.

In the 6th grade we were scheduled to go on a field trip and see it. The trip was cancelled [:(]
RE: Some pics of USS Alabama
Thanks for posting photo's!
I visited in 2010, and your post brings back fond memories. Unlike other BB's I toured, The Alabama allowed us to to go up the upper decks of the main tower. The view is absolutely stunning not only of the rest of this fine vessel, but also the headwaters of Mobile Bay. My biggest enjoyment however was seeing the Bob Feller display below deck. As with many others of this generation, it shows what men and women willingly gave up to enlist in this fight. Hell of a ball player, and a true patriot.

How the heck do they keep it in such good shape!?

Possibly, but I would prefer the pre-Iowa BB's. The Iowa's were refitted after WWII. The nearest might be the USS Massachusetts in Fall River, MA. They have a sub, a DD, and a PT as well, IIRC. Still wanting to go, but never seem to get there, had plans once that fell through.

Well I was hoping to be on the Yamato, but that sank somewhere South of Okinawa. There a model of it in Tokyo or elsewhere...

Nice pics of BB Alabama.
I went to see the USS North Carolina last year (pic below is from Google Maps).
We have USS Iowa here in SoCal to visit, she is impressive, but she is modernized - whereas the North Carolina is in WW2 outfit.
Also, you can't go below on the Iowa - and see everything, but on the Showboat - the entire ship is open to explorer (from inside the 16" turrets to the bottom of the magazines and the engine rooms).
So for WitP:AE/WW2 History fans - the North Carolina is a far more rewarding experience to visit.... unless you love guided missiles

Yep that the North Carolina alright. You can tell with those two funnel stacks, compare to South Dakotas and Iowas.

On a much smaller scale, I really enjoyed touring Bowfin at Pearl. I need to visit the Texas one of these days soon. Dearly wish Warspite had been saved from the brakers. She should have had a place beside HMS Victory.
RE: Some pics of USS Alabama
Totally agree with the sentiment, but given that the war left the British Government heavily in debt and the British people demanding attention to all the things neglected while the war was raging, there was simply no money available to undertake such a memorial. Warspite was in bad shape and would have required expensive repairs too.ORIGINAL: Wirraway_Ace

I was in Los Angeles for a wedding last week, and had the pleasure of touring USS Iowa on Sunday. While it is true that she is not in her WWII "rig", it was still a worthwhile visit. The best part of the tour was meeting a WWII vet, Mr Bob Despain, who was a survivor of USS Hoel. She was one of the DD's that was escorting the CVE's of Taffy 3. I bought a book about the Battle of Samar from Mr Despain Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors that he was kind enough to autograph for me. Here's a pic of Iowa taken when we did a harbor cruise.
