Best way to play Close Combat in 2016?

Post by squatter »

Hello all

I'm keen to return to the world of perhaps the greatest real-time WWII game of all time: Close Combat.

Now, I'm I'm a CC veteran - played all versions through CC1 to LSA. But I haven't played for about six years. The main reason being was that I only play H2h with a buddy, and the last few versions of the game I bought were incredibly unstable in multiplayer, leaving me feeling completely ripped off having spent $100s. Because we play campaigns, the multiple CTDs were a nightmare and just ruined the whole thing and made the games unplayable.

But the time for me to return to the series is now!

So my question is, which version of CC should I purchase for stable multiplayer campaigns? The last properly stable version in my memory was really CC5, but SURELY Matrix aren't continuing to release unstable iterations of the same game at premium prices?!

Also, the ability to use mods would be great - I don't know if this affects the Steam versions at all?

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

I have not played in many, many years but you should check these Close Combat titles out:

Thanks for the reply Wings.

Thing is, we also played Caen, and found it unplayably unstable in multiplayer, so I must admit I don't trust any of the Matrix CC games to be stable H2H unless someone with experience tells me otherwise. I'm wondering whether I'm best off returning to CC5, unless any of the Matrix titles have been patched sufficiently?

Does anyone out there have any experience H2H with the Matrix CC titles?

I Used to play Close Combat 3 and 4 in multiplayer mode (TCP/IP) and had no problems. However "Close Combat 5 - Invasion Normandy" had a nasty habit of randomly crashing in multiplayer mode.

I have also wondered if the Matrix Games versions have a stable multi player or if they used the buggy net code from CC5.

The Matrix releases are all based on the CC5 code thus the bugs in CC5 were carried forward. Many were fixed but some critical ones like crashes due to air strikes, morale break and hitting 0:00 at the end battle were not eliminated as supposedly they couldn't repeat them.

That is pretty much what I was afraid of...
