Bay of Pigs Invasion

Post by rico21 »

Bay of Pigs Invasion
17 April 1961
The Bay of Pigs Invasion (Spanish: Invasión de Playa Girón or Invasión de Bahía de Cochinos or Batalla de Girón) was
a failed military invasion of Cuba undertaken by the CIA-sponsored paramilitary group Brigade 2506 on 17 April 1961.
A counter-revolutionary military, trained and funded by the United States government's Central Intelligence Agency (CIA),
Brigade 2506 fronted the armed wing of the Democratic Revolutionary Front (DRF) and intended to overthrow the
increasingly communist government of Fidel Castro. Launched from Guatemala & Nicaragua, the invading force was defeated
within three days by the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, under the direct command of Prime Minister Fidel Castro.
Over 1,400 paramilitaries, divided into five infantry battalions and one paratrooper battalion, assembled in Guatemala
before setting out for Cuba by boat on 13 April 1961. Two days later on 15 April, eight CIA-supplied B-26 bombers
attacked Cuban airfields and then returned to the US. On the night of 16 April, the main invasion landed at a beach named
Playa Girón in the Bay of Pigs. It initially overwhelmed a local revolutionary militia. The Cuban Army's counter-offensive
was led by José Ramón Fernández, before Castro decided to take personal control of the operation. As the US involvement
became apparent to the world, Kennedy decided against providing further air cover for the invasion. As a result, the
invasion only had half the forces the CIA had deemed necessary. The original plan devised during Eisenhower's presidency
had required both air and naval support. On 20 April, the invaders surrendered after only three days, with the majority
being publicly interrogated and put into Cuban prisons.

La Fiere

La Fiere
On D Minus One the men of the US 82nd "All American" Airborne Division jumped into Normandy with the mission
of halting German reinforcements from reaching Utah Beach. The division’s two main drop zones were positioned around
the French town of Sainte Mere Eglise in two large open areas. The Merderet River divided these two areas and thus became
the first objective of the 82nd in order to consolidate their position. During the drop, the shaken pilots of the
paratrooper’s C-47 transport planes dropped the soldiers all across the Cotentin Penninsula, resulting in mass confusion.
Still, the men knew what had to be done, having studied the sand tables and maps thoroughly back in England. Elements of
the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment converged on the bridge during the night of 5/6 June and established a rough
perimeter. At 1400 hours on 6 June, the Germans attacked in force with 1057. Grenadierregiment supported by 100. Panzer
Ausbildungs und Ersatz Abteilung, a tank training and replacement battalion.
The grenadiers advanced with the old French training tanks. As they approached the bridge, the tanks stopped in front
of the small minefield deployed by the paratroopers. As the infantry moved to clear the mines, the paratroopers opened
fire, causing casualties and forcing the tanks to pull back. Once they regrouped, a handful of H-39 tanks advanced
slowly toward the bridge. Suddenly, the first was knocked out by two carefully hidden bazooka teams. Nevertheless the
Germans pressed the attack and forced the paratroopers back to the eastern side of the bridge.
The Germans halted at the river, unable to advance through the now heavily-defended western bank. A stalemate developed
as the two sides struggled to gather enough strength to push the other back.
Eventually the paratroopers managed to push the Germans back thanks to the timely arrival of their glider-borne
regiment as well as several Sherman tanks which had arrived from Utah Beach. Unable to repel firepower of that magnitude,
the Beutepanzer tanks withdrew and the bridge finally fell into the hands of the Americans on 9 June.

Pavlov's House for ever
STALINGRAD, October 20, 1942: At the end of September, units of Rodimtsev's 13th Guards were ordered to seize buildings
on Lenin Square and form strongpoints. A damaged apartment building was attacked and occupied by Sgt. Jacob Pavlov and
his men, who formed a defensive position with some meager reinforcements. Since it sat astride the German line of advance
to the Volga only 250 meters away, this strongpoint came under frequent attack. On 20 October, as part of they general
German effort to compete their seizure of the city, one of the strongest attacks to date was launched against Pavlov's

Vyazma Airborne Operation

Post by rico21 »

Vyazma Airborne Operation
The Vyazma Airborne Operation was a Red Army airborne landing in the rear of German lines during the Battles of Rzhev.
It took place from 18 January to 28 February 1942. The objective of the airborne landing was to help troops of the
Kalinin Front and Western Front to encircle and destroy Army Group Centre. The airborne operation was unsuccessful and
resulted in the loss of most of the troops landed.
The Rzhev-Vyazma Offensive began on 8 January 1942 with the aim of encircling Army Group Centre. In the first stages of
the operation, the Red Army achieved some successes. As a result of the attacks of the Kalinin and Western Fronts, the
German lines were breached in several places. In order to facilitate the advance of the troops, Stavka decided to land
troops south of Vyazma with the objective of cutting the Vyazma-Yukhnov highway and the Vyazma-Bryansk railroad. The
planned drop zone was guarded by scattered German units. The first group of airborne troops, composed of the 201st
Airborne Brigade and the 250th Airborne Regiment, was landed in the rear of German troops south of Vyazma from 18 to
22 January. The landing was made at night, and the paratroopers presence in the German rear helped the attacks of the
33rd Army and 1st Guards Cavalry Corps.

A Desperate Affair
The mission of the German paratroopers approaching Heraklion was to take the town and its airfield in order to land
troops of the 5th Mountain Division. As the paratroopers jumped from the Junker Ju52s, each armed with only a few
grenades and a pistol, they were confident of their success. German intelligence, however, had erred terribly in
calculating the British forces ability to resist an airborne attack. . .

Heraklion
Crete, May 20, 1941
German paratroopers jump over three strategic areas of the north side of Crete. This is supposed to be a surprise
attack ... Defenders, well hidden, open fire on the fallschirmjaegers even before they did hit the ground. German
paratroopers jump over the area, and scattered far from their main goal. Their parachute and the door of the aircraft
allow them to jump with a handgun, a knife and some grenades. Heavier weapons are launched separately in boxes. You must
quickly recover funds before they are captured by the enemy. You also need to neutralize the DCA, which protects the
area. According to the intelligence services, you can expect light resistance and support of the civilian population.

DROPPING OFF AT MALEME?
Maleme Airport, Crete, May 21, 1941: The previous day, at the beginning of operation Merkur, the Luftelande-
Sturmregiment underwent heavy losses from the 22nd New Zealand Battalion while attempting to seize the Maleme airport.
Having failed, it was forced to entrench near the objective for the night. On the evening of May 20, the German
operation really did not seem a success. In spite of its failure, the Luftlande-Sturmregiment was the unit which seemed
to have established the most promising bridgehead. It confirmed that judgement on May 21 while seizing hill 107 which
overlooked the airfield in the south. Paratroops of Fallshurm-jäger-regiments 1 and 2 were en route to reinforce at 1430
hours and landed under the protection of a group of Junker 87.

PrisonValley
Crete(Near Canea), May 20, 1941
In the first strategic use of airborne forces in history German forces were to land at key points along the
Northern coast of Crete. In the West at Maleme the New Zealand defenders kept the German forces at bay but due to poor
coordination were eventually overwhelmed. The next landing was concentrated in the area south-west of Galatas and
Canea. Here the Germans found themselves dominated by the hills of "Prison Valley".
The objective for both sides is to control two out of the three objectives (Perivolia, "The Prison" and the eastern
building of Galatas) at the end of 9 moves.

Operation Merkur 5/---

Galatas Bayonet Charge
Crete, May 25, 1941
On May 20, 1941 the Germans launched Operation Mercury, the airborne invasion of Crete. Over the following four days
they secured the Maleme airfield and steadily pushed the defending forces back as they gained a grip on the island.
Crack German paratroops and mountain infantry, pushing strongly along the Galatas Line, finally forced the New Zealand
Composite Battalion (an ad hoc battalion formed from anti tank gunners, engineers and support troops) and 18 Battalion
from their positions around the village of Galatas, seizing it shortly before dusk on the 25th and thus threatening the
entire Galatas line. The New Zealand 23rd Battalion, in reserve, was called upon to help and arrived about 7 p.m. With
a German breakthrough pending immediate action was called for. A quick run in and out of the village by two Vickers VI
light tanks of the 3rd Hussars with guns blazing was all the reconnaissance time allowed. The tanks returned with the
information that the place was "stiff with Jerries". One of the tanks' commanders and a gunner had been wounded and with
no replacements, two men attached to HQ Company of the 23rd but with no previous tank experience volunteered to step in.
At 8:10, with the sun setting, the order was given to attack. As the tanks moved back up the road towards the village, C
and D companies of the 23rd Battalion, with fixed bayonets, fell in along both sides of the road. Joined by elements of
the recently ousted 18th Battalion intent on revenge, the 20th and other units, the New Zealanders swept forward in what
has been called "one of the greatest bayonet charges of the Second World War".
