Stellaris development was roughly 1 year from announcement to release

Here it's one year from vague announcement to another vague announcement lol.

Did you compare the manpower involved as well?
I am not defending the DW2 devs, but each game takes its own time and if there is nothing to show yet, what would YOU show?

As I posted before, the manpower is probably Elliot with a few artists.
Also I never pushed for info or a release date. Therefore your post is moot.

The above is a great interview with Erik that gets into game development and other things. It's a good read.

Thanks for the link, Retreat1970. I came across it a year ago, but didn't bookmark it. In the broadest sense, I think this interview is the closest thing to a preview of DW2 we're going to have for a long while. Just reading what Erik could or would want to address in a "wrap up project" (DW-U?!), and/or in DW2. Then seeing what they actually did with DW-U, could give us a hint at what they might do with DW2. Just my thoughts.

I think if we make a big enough fuss, we might get thrown a bone.

Sorry to keep you all in suspense - we are working on Distant Worlds 2, but not ready to release more information as yet. [8D]
This is great to hear! I understand if you're very early in the development process but please consider a dev blog entry every now and then showing some game mechanics/graphics/features being created. It doesn't matter if it's bare bones information. I'm sure the DW community will appreciate it a lot as well as garnering good interest in the game.

Doubt it. Erik said they'll release info when ready.

If you haven't, read the interview I linked to in my last post. It explains how DW was developed, and I'm sure the same thing is happening now.

There are indeed many, many games that have a larger development team than we do. However, it's probably more fair to compare this to the development of DW1 + all the time that went into the development of the expansions. By that measure, we are way ahead of schedule. [;)]

With that said, I know you are all impatient for news and an eventual release. I can only say that we will release it when it's ready, but I hope we will have a lot of news for you well before another year has passed.

- Erik

Thanks for the post, Erik!

After reading how much Erik enjoyed the idea of the original DW and getting that to work, I think we can rest assured that the next iteration will be great. Without hyperbole, it's my most anticipated game. Besides Half-Life 3.

Idle thought: maybe we should get a kickstarter the likes of Star Citizen.

I feel like the most innovative and promising games recently are the ones made by smaller developers. If a kickstarter gives Erik the resources he needs to turn this into something big I'm all for it and would happily support him.

I doubt funding is an issue for DW2. Distant Worlds is a game by one developer with some help from a publisher. Add Erik and it is probably him spending quite some time discussing with the single developer, with some extra help for graphics and publishing. I believe DW (Universe) has done quite well (by Matrix scale), and they expect DW2 to do the same.

I doubt that this process scales very well to a much larger team. I rather have Elliot/Erik and some extra resources create another brilliant game, than have a larger team ruin it.

And as long as Elliot can create a game as brilliant as DW, I could not care less if he scores rather poorly as an internet hype machine. It would be rather hard to create that brilliant hype without using time and effort that would be better spent creating the game, anyways.

Sorry, my kickstarter comment was tongue-in-cheek, considering the interesting development cycle that Star Citizen has spiraled out of control into. [;)]

DW2 will be a day one purchase for me after all the fun I've had with DW over the years. But since that day is still probably a long way off I'll just mention that Endless Space 2 goes into Early Access on Steam next week. No price yet. It's basically Endless Legend in space. It will also be a day one purchase for me.

Edit - It's probably more like Endless Space and Endless Legend got together and had a baby. It takes the best of both and adds more features.

Can we have some more modding options for DW2?

Currently one can change all the numbers on modules, facilities. However it would be nice if it would be possible to also change the actual effects and meta properties of those, i.e. being able to give other weapons bonus against armor or create new types of facilities with their own specific bonus. Especially being able to give ship types their own properties would make they ship types less redundant, i.e. being able to give destroyers +x% weapon dmg or make escorts use x% less maintenance etc.
That basically includes all the stuff that is hard coded in the game, such as amount of systems on the playing field, %modifiers for difficulties or amount of pirates etc.
