OT: pics of USS Stennis CVN-74 headed into port in Bremerton, WA

Post by DConn »

On Sunday I went down to Rich Passage (south end of Bainbridge Island, WA) to see the Stennis go through the channel headed to Bremerton. Thought I would post some pics for those who are interested!

How long do those poor guys have to stand in formation like that? Are they told they will either scrub the deck or stand there in their Sunday best?

In the RN it depends on how long it takes to get from first public viewing to docking. Looks like it's going down river so longish time.

We were in the Seattle area this summer and we took the ferry over to Bremerton. Really nice place to be homeported.

We toured the museum at the shipyard, ate lunch in a relocated Horse and Cow (the unofficial official bar of the submarine force, now in its third location ex-Mare Island, ex-San Diego), and toured the museum ship USS Turner Joy (of Tonkin Gulf fame.) Girl of the Prairie had never been on a warship of any kind, so I got to show off a little. She really liked the engineering spaces.

Moose, did you happen to make it to the Naval Undersea Warfare museum in Keyport? Small, but interesting (about 10 miles north of Bremerton).

No, we were on foot in Bremerton. Didn't go far from the ferry landing.

I talked to the co-owner of the Horse and Cow awhile while we ate. He was ex-USS Daniel Boone, the boat right in front of us in the Kings Bay refit cycle. We overlapped by two years. When he got out he worked at Keyport for over fifteen years. Told me a little about it. I was an east coast guy; we did AUTEC, not Keyport. Had only heard the place existed, but never anything about it.
