Destroyed machine-guns

According to the manual, a machine-gun can be broken after firing.
But I have discovered another thing.
My heavy german machine-gun has opened fire during the defensive fire phase and it has been destroyed. Its counter has disappeared.
Does it mean that the engine simulates this kind of accident (the machine-gun breaking totally without any hope to repear it) ?

Yes but it's very rare...
