(For fun) The best weapon designed to shoot down a Helo, is another Helo

Scenario "Submarine off Sao Tome" , USN 1 Arleigh Burke DDG 2 LCS vs PLAN 1 052C DDG 2 Sub.
my LCS has already depleted half of their SAM to destroy the SSM from Type 093G
my UAV was following 052C. in the middle of the game, it detected a Z9 left 052C, the bearing and speed means my LCS group will get into Z9's detection range in less than 20min. At first I thought I have nothing to counter this threat, RIM116C's range is only 10nm, DDG is still 90nm far away. I fall into a panic mode , I have to do something to stop the 052C release a salvo of YJ62 to my LCS.
Then I realized I have something to destroy the Z9 before it found me. A MH60S took off in 30s, rush to intercept position, then keep firing the 20mm M197 until the Z9 going down into the flame.
Ammo usage: 280rd 20mm, my poor LCSs are safe for now. [:D]

But I think Z9 can mount gun pod or open the side hatch to fire the handheld firearms. The latter one is underpowered, while the first one is powerful but forward fixed. This could be a very good helicopter dogfight at this scenario's turning point.





It might be different for navy's Z-9 though, so I rather accept the result.

A 20mm gatling gun would indeed make a mess of another helo. Good thinking, I wouldn't have considered it.

Probably worth a shot with other lighter caliber MGs found on a lot of ASW type helos too.

An interesting point came out of the US Army's National Training Ctr in Fort Irwin back in the 80's, which caused some doctrinal re-writing: That the best way of killing a helicopter, especially the very new and sensor laden OH-58D -- was a tank main gun! The 58 would get fixated on its target many Km away and forget about the tank 600M to his left! The second most effective weapon - 5.56mm rounds from an M-16 when the Helo flew over undetected infantry, the AH-64 had protection but no self respecting infantryman would draw attention from that, but all the others...

This was a very good idea.
