map edge and other map support

Post by el cid again »

I have managed to master the AE map system, possibly completely.
This was necessary to modify Andrew Brown's Extended Map system
to add off map locations of interest to RHS: Recife (Brazil),
Gulf Coast (New Orleans), Murmansk (USSR), and two special cases
- on map ports as both on and off map ports (Tiksi at the Mouth
of the Lena River and Krasnoyarsk, already on the map but not able
to connect via river to Murmansk or Tiksi, until now).

The process involves modifying location files, pwhexe.dat files, pwzone.dat
files and pwzlink.dat files. There is a new pwzone.dat editor (because
the original didn't work properly) and there probably will be new pwlink.dat
and pwhexe.dat files (both of which cannot work on a new wide screen display,
but work on older screens). Mifune, just recovered from a medical setback,
may be up to doing map art to add Madgascar - for which we have planes and OB
already in the database and art set. And I have to make about 25 more pwhexe.dat
files for Level II. And there is a good deal more map art in the works, both
modified and wholly new forms. So I will be working extensively with map matters
and that will keep me technically functional.

Anyone needing any support for any mod can ask and we will try to explain how
to do whatever it is you want to do.

Note that - on separate threads - I have issued pwzlink.dat files for the standard
map system of stock and any mod using it as well as for Andrew Brown's Extended
map system for anyone using it. These have the correct distance between ports
taken from the standard navigation publication "Distance Between Ports" as published
by the University of California. I am considering issuing corrected pwhexe.dat files
for both map systems dealing with minor flaws (nation codes in sea hexes, incorrect
or missing nation codes in land and off map hexes, etc) if there is any interest in
such files (which RHS does not need). I created 52 pwhexe.dat files for RHS Levels
I and II - and now am on another set of 26 modified ones for Level II using a better
editor (and a hex editor). Modification of such files is easy for me - if anyone
wants them.
